NY chicken lover!!!!

tinahoak---i work at Strong

Everyone else---hope you have all been well. DH and I put our house up for sale and are moving to FL, he's sick of getting laid off (gotta love NY state economy in this area) and I'm sick of the cold, I lived in St.Pete 6 years ago and LOVED it, now my sis and her DH have moved to that area.....have slowly gotten rid of all my dear chicks, guineas and TOM turkey, am keeping about 10 hens to the bitter end.
If anyone wants a breeding pair of giant blue cochin, let me know, that's about all I have left to sell for now..........

Taj, I hope your house selling/moving goes well. Let me know if you are havin a chicken supply sale...I could take some stuff off your hands. Do you plan to get chickens in florida? My DH works in construction and we are feeling the same way, he's off for the next 2 weeks and it happens after every job, and then there's the winter. Every time I get caught up, he's out of work and we fall behind again. frustrating. wish you the best of luck and chickens or not, would still like to hear from you!

I hear ya! My husband is a welder, this will be the 4th time he's getting laid off in 2 years! I feel the same way, every time we get caught up BAM! he gets laid off again. It's not his fault, they keep him on as log as they possibley can every time but it's soooooo depressing!

I just sent everything I had extra to my auntie, will let you know if I have stuff left at the end, won't be having chickens in FL for a few years till we get a house again, we'll get an apartment for a while to see where we really want to settle in.

We listed the house a week ago and have 2 couples coming tonight for showings so that looks promising! It's a log cabin on 17 acres with a view so we will see what happens!

I got chickens just for that reason. To many friends being downsized. No matter how you spell it it's out of work just the same. I figured I could at least give them some eggs. Guess what, I got downsized just before I got chickens. At least I have some benefits to count on. My children however are having it rough finding a self supporting job. College doesn't help either.

I hate the cold and the rain, but am to old to start over. The financial state of NY is scarey. We're just getting by.

Hope things work out for ya'll

My sis and her DH just sold their house in Saratoga Springs area for half a million. (they are docs.) we are selling ours in podunk for 170,000$. guess who pays more for property taxes????

ME!!!!!! splain that to me Lucy!

We are about 35 minutes south of Saratoga and have a little camp in Corinth, 15 min west of Saratoga. The Grandparents-in-law bought the camp back in the 50's for like $3000-on the water. Appraisals now are nuts! Can't believe what housing is going for these days.

Hope everything goes well for you

My dad and 2 brothers are welders too, so I know how that goes. My dad just went back to work and both brothers have been out for I dont know how long.

BTW, I would Love to have a log cabin and 17 acres! Dont come by that too much where we are. We are lucky to have the 2 acres we have!

Oh, I would so love a cabin on 17 acres... Heck, I would love a shack on 17 acres if it came with a barn!

No way can we move though, we're sooo broke it isn't even funny. I can't find a job to save my life here, I owned my own business for almost 8 years (Retail, trust me, I knew the economy was tanking long before the experts did!) I've applied for a few jobs in the last year that didn't require me to be available 24/7, but I can't even get an interview! Last one for a temp job (third shift making plastic bread bags) they told me I was unemployable because I don't have recent job history!

I've decided I am not looking anymore (My husband keeps asking when I am going to find a job, and is just not getting how depressing it is to be perfect for something and not even get a call!)

The critters pretty much feed themselves, but they really need to generate some income. Funny how some rabbit or chicken people get offended when you want to make a couple bucks?

I finally found a line on some decent Buff ducks (in Canada, or MN) and hopefully I will be able to upgrade the Cochins week after next. The Ameraucanas look good, if only I could hatch a thing. Ditto for the Silkies. The few I did mange to hatch look really nice, I'm going to have to find a spare cage here to lock them up in!

Its like on Calamity after another just keeps finding me, I know adversity makes you stronger, but really? I don't need anything else to not feed their babies, not hatch their eggs, drop dead or get eaten this month. The list of stuff the livestock needs is just neverending.

And Rain? Bleh. My yard is now a lake, with muddy poo covered islands here and there. Everytime it rains, everything gets wet, because we have the redneck shelter thing going on here.

And I have a garage and basement just crammed full of leftover gift store stuff, anyone wanna trade country type stuff for something? At this point, I just want an empty garage so I can put more chickens and bunnies in it! I take one or two things to the Bridgeport auction every time, but man, its going to take forever to have a clean garage!

Now I just need to decide what sex my Harlequins, Sweedish and Cayugas are... I'm going to sell most of the Buffs if anyone is interested, they've got Buff lacing coming in over the backs, so they're not going to make the cut for the breeding program (Back to the drawing board, sigh)

Can't get the guy with the Cochins to email me back yet to set up a date to get them, I probably offended him somehow, LOL I hate to move onto the next breeder on my list and have him get back to me after I have already spent the money!

Has anyone ever brooded Coturnix eggs under a Silkie? I have yet another broody hen, I refuse to buy them eggs, since they all seem to change their mind like partway thru brooding! I need to have my husband build me a Broody condo or something?
