You crack me up. I'm dying of the heat today and you're already worried about snow! When it gets really cold and snowy your chickens will probabbly choose to spend most of thier time in the coop. I found it easiest to shovel a path to the coop every day and a small area of the run so they could come out if they choose. It's definately easier to have an established path to maintain so that when the drifts start blowing again it's easier to clean up. (Does that make sense?)

Hi everybody!
Long time, no type.
First off, where are you guys that had the heat wave break? We're in Western N.Y. and are still getting temps in the 90*-100* range. My chickens don't like water of any kind falling on their heads, so I couldn't even spray them down. (I now know what a chicken's dirty look is

As far as winter goes, we DO have a snowblower for the run. When we bought a bigger one for the driveway, the old one was "sent down". We also insulated the coop and use a heat lamp in the winter. Plugged it into one of those timers for x-mas lights. Had to. The water kept freezing.
If this is their first winter, then you're in for a ttreat. Just wait until you see their "get it off, get it OFF" dance. Priceless.

I live in the NYC area and we're in the heat wave. Good grief...brown outs $%^%
I feel bad for ANY creature living outside right now. I let my birds free range so they can find relief in the bushes dirt etc. The coop/pen are just way too hot poor things. And they hate the water as well.
I shovel a bit for my birds but their coop/pen is covered. They look at the snow and fly over it to get to shoveled paths around the hough though. Way too funny!

You can see them following the trails in single file and it just cracks me up.

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to say "hi" to all of you in NY. I am new to chickens - I have ten 7-week old pullets and I can't believe how hooked I am on this hobby! I find that taking care of them is very therapeutic for me - I just love going out in the mornings to open the coop, bringing them treats all day, watching their behavior with each other, with my kids, and with me, and locking things up at night. I spent an hour this evening just watching them free range in the grass - it was their first time outside of their run and they were in chicken heaven!
I am in Ballston Spa which is in Saratoga County. If any of you are nearby, let me know! I would love to compare notes with you!

Welcome Myblackhen! I know exactly where you are and its a nice place. I live in the Hudson Valley and we have 8 15 week old pullets. Yes, they are great to watch and are very addictive! I am already planning for next spring...more chickens!!! There is a great website you may want to look at to answer any questions you might have as well as just to educate yourself...Backyardchickens.com. I will warn you that it is highly addictive!!! I am also sure that there is probably a local chicken lovers website in your area. It is great to be in touch with these people as I have found down here. They are fellow enthusiasts and can help you with any questions/concerns and just sharing! Hopefully someone in your area will see your post and give you their webite. Anyways, welcome to the addiction! Watch out for that chicken math too!
