NY chicken lover!!!!

What I meant was what ever it is your looking for or looking to sell. Why not post it here or in cities/areas other than yours. I drove to Amsterdam to buy my Cuckoo marans and paid $10 a chick. Some breeds aren't that easy to find as many folks don't hatch or breed.

If there is something or breed your looking for you could post it around the state like I did. I got my Delawares from WNY and no one I know is breeding them except me and I don't breed hatchery stock. Where do folks go for replacement stock? Some folks just buy pullets.

Tab's chicken obsession :

The last time I saw a posting on CL for the Bridgeport auction it was posted the morning of the auction, which isn't that helpful.

Yes, they are not good at announcing the auctions ahead of time.

If you sell there, they take your email, and send you a pivate email about upcoming auctions, but last time it came at 10pm the night before, so I did't see it until Sat morning, and it was too late to take anything.

I only sell there, I never buy. I usually take young stock that I don't have room for in the spring.

I know this is off-topic from the other are talking about right now, but...

Have any of you that live in NY state raised chicks starting the end of March or beginning of April?

I might be combining an order of layers and Freedom Ranger chicks with someone else (they ordering more than me), and they were thinking of the end of March to the first week in April.
Last year, I got Cornish x April 1st and they stayed inside for 3 weeks, until April 18th or so, when the other "layer" batch came, which stayed inside for 4 wks, due to finishing their coop.
They all did fine, although I wondered if the colder temps at night for the meaties slowed down their growth. Other people's weights and pics seemed larger than what mine were,
and they weren't that much bigger dressed out at 12 wks than those who did that at 8-10 wks!

Anyways, I guess it would be fine to get them that early again, except for I don't think I'll be able to keep them inside for 6+ weeks. Don't have space in my room anymore and the chicks were very messy.
We don't have a garage, only my brother's shed & the chicken coop. The basement is carpeted and I'm not sure if the family would want the chicks in there for more than 2-4 weeks.
We do have an roof overhang on the back side of the house, that would provide protection from the wind and weather. What if I built a brooder that would be appropriate for colder weather,
but also, ventilated? I thought, depending on the weather and temps outdoors, once they were two weeks old or so - putting them outside in the brooder under the "eaves" during the day and inside during the night,
since there is a sliding glass door that would make it "easier" to bring it in and out. On sunny, warm days, once they were feathered out, I could try putting them in a "pen", since the other meaties started going outside at 4 wks or so, the mid of April, and seemed to do fine temp wise.

I thought I'd ask you, if this idea is okay or not, since we live in the same state. We're technically a zone 5, according to low temps, but our first/last frost dates are more like zone 4.
So, in April and May, we can still have temps 20-30 at night and sometimes it's only 40s during the day. Other years, it's been warmer in April/May than it's been in June! We just never know.

Hmmm...If you are getting birds in the beginning of April, I don't think it would be wise to put them outside until they are FULLY feathered. 3 weeks is a bit young...and I would think their energy would go towards keeping them warm vs growing.

thanks! Their website only has 2009 auctions.. you know if they did it this year?

Here is their phone number 1 800 237 4488. When they didn't have anything listed on the site they offered to mail the new schedule. The small animal auctions are usually the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month.

Does anyone here have exterior nesting boxes on their coop? Have your got pics and how do the hens like them to lay in? I'd like to increase my floor space by putting in exterior boxes.

Thanks

any one ordering chicks from Hinkjc farms?

Unfortunately, Kings Auction in West Winfield burned down last weekend...

They had small animal auctions twice a month. He said they have no insurance, so I'm guessing they will not rebuild.

That puts a huge gap in places to sell poultry in Central, NY.

I have FR in the barn. They will be 6 week sold tomorrow. They grew fast until 2 weeks ago and then slowed down when I took them out of the enclosed brooder and put them onthe barn floor with a heat lamp. They are fully feathered now, but still go under the heat lamp occasionally.

I realized that they would take longer to get to butcher size due to the cold, so I"m not concerned. I also started them on whole grains. to help with the feed bill. They are not wild about it, but they are eating it. I expect they won't get to full size until March, but that is ok with me.

I didn't answer your question about going outside, but you can raise them when its colder, it just takes longer.
