Is this a nipple waterer? I use those for all my birds, even babies. You have to give them no other option. If there's a pan of water nearby, they will go there first. Also make sure there's an air vent in the top (I just drill a hole in the lid of my five gallon bucket waterers).

OK, if I take away their other waterer, they will figure it out?

Good new is horse is better, and Rick offered to give me a couple of pullets in the fall as replacemnets, so that is so nice of him...and apparently, the fox didnt get the hesn that were laying the eggs, so I guess I feel better. Although I'm down 3 blue hens of the blrws.

Oh...thank goodness-that is so nice of him....he really seems like a great guy! I've got some due to hatch out soon...fingers crossed!! I hope you get that fox soon, even if he isn't getting your egg layers..you don't need that thing around!!

Yes, you have to take away their regular waterer. YOu can peck their beaks on the new one, but mine seem to pick it up quickly, especially if there's a drop hanging off.

I use nipple waterers right out of the egg and I never have to show them.. They peck everything and whoa! there's water there!

But they won't use it if a regular waterer is available.

Featherz, I do too, they rock.

vmdanielsen if they're older birds..you may just have to grab ahold of them and peck their beaks on it a few times. They will get it eventually.....or...like I had to do with my new silver laced...reintroduce it. When I first got them...they had no other water but the nipple. Grabbed them, tapped their beaks on the nipple...they hemmed and hawwed...left it for a day...still nothing. Now at this point, I'm freaking, expensive birds..lol! So I take out the nipple waterer, put a quart waterer in....leave it for a few days, then try again-after the quart waterer ran dry that day and they were thirsty. Success!!! It's really just a matter of trial and error and seeing what works and just playing around with it. Adult silkies seem to have a hard time for some reason, so I use rabbit waterers with them..baby silkies...perfecto! LOL They don't have all that moppy fluff yet! Good luck!!

Trish

But yeah, watching babies right out of the bator take to pecking away at a nipple waterer...soooooo gosh darn cute!! And it makes life sooo much easier for their mommies! LOL

I currently have 3 for free. They are Nat's (Sonew) Chuckie ducklings...the dad is a crested magpie, the moms are a mix of Khaki Campbell/Runner. Really cute/sweet little ducklings. Jump on these! They should be full of personality and excellent layers!

This week I have another hatch due, this next Tuesday, but have some takers on the ducklings and not sure what I'll have left over if they all hatch. (Calls, BBS Cayugas and Silver Appleyards)

Let me know on the Chuckie duckies, otherwise they end up in a box for Bridget tomorrow!

Right Bridget???

If they're not promised to Bridget....I will take them! Let me know when and where. Thanks, I appreciate it...variety is the spice of life and I like color with all my birds...just ask Renee! LOL

The question begs to be asked...how many birds? AND...does it matter if you are in the middle of incubating, or brooding chicks? Will you PM me info to the person you used? I'd like to get this done also...been putting it off.

Her name is Lorraine. I called the State # & she called me. I have 40 breeders right now & 5 chicks over 4 months old. They tested 30. It took around 2 hours to do. She didn't inspect my coops, but the last vet tech did. She looked at my brooders on the way to wash her hands, but nothing formal. I'm not letting Gizmo or Ninja-girl sit yet, so I took them off eggs & took the eggs.

I know -- I'm a meanie! If you have under 30 I believe they test them all. Over 30, but below ? they only test 30. They have to do a certain percentage. I'm sure if you have a girl brooding eggs, they won't make you pull her.

You have to do it so you can show... it's only scary the first time!

Remember what I said about stress. Any changes to the coop and they will back off from laying. Just so you should know. They of course will pick up but it will take some time. I put a bunch of new Del pullets in the coop and now they've slowed up a bit and it's been a week.

Give it time.

Rancher

I'm listening. They don't use the roost yet, so moving it is not going to stress them. They don't use the nest box yet either, so relocating THAT might get their attention. I really really wouldn't care ONE BIT if they didn't lay eggs for a month....but they chose the week BEFORE Easter to quit. That's what I am stressing about. After Easter they can take time off. I told the 4 of them that if they didn't lay an egg tomorrow for me I'm gonna sit in their coop and cry.

But as long as they aren't laying I'm gonna move that roost. If I trip over it and can't work it won't be good and I am not sure they would even beleive me at work. LOL (Not to meantion it is a low roost for these bantams, not sure full size chicken can get under it to get out of the coop)

Hi Matt!

Glad you like them & they're doing well!!!! I think I have enough white Ameraucanas to make me happy -- so I'll be sharing them after the next hatch!

Hi Muggs! I'll be there - did we decide on a time? Sorry been busy with the house, dinner, cleaning and making muffins for the darling husband for his lunch snacks for the week the last couple of hours. I'm game for the chicks. I just went out and bought another one of those expensive metal waterers that fills nicely - the problem is that they just don't stay clean - yuck! Cleaned up some of the basement while I had a few moments and put away the stack of incubator and egg turner boxes I seem to have collected - don't know how, must be the other three units hanging around being used upstairs - going to have to move them before the Showing Friday - poor people may wig out and I'm sure big white styrofoam boxes with eggs in them is a turn off to the general public when looking at a home.
