My basement is covered in dust, eeeewww. I think the ducks are less dusty, but twice as messy! I brood mine in the basement and then they go outside someplace.

I need to build a "teen" area for chickens, I didn't have great results mixing young birds in with my adult stock last year. I dunno how my husband will feel about another chicken coop though, I really
NEED a barn (okay, I need two barns!) I tried putting the young chicks in with the rabbits in the garage/hoop house and that was NOT good. I didn't notice an excessive amount of dust from Silkies though.

Probably as little as possible. Soft foods like melon, scrambled eggs, lettuce and lots of water, just not layer feed. She might get runny stool but that's better than solid I guess. Try to keep everything back there clean and inside. Of course all of this is only to try to give her muscles some time to tighten up but honestly this type of thing usually is recurring from what I've read.

I've only had it happen once and by the time I found her it was to late and she had to be culled. Anyone else got anything that might help?

I hope things work out.

Thanks Rancher. When I got up this morning, I had to push the vent back in again. I have some kale and clover started for the chickens. I'll nip off the tops and feed them to her. I had wondered about it recurring. I figured I'd try and get her put back together first. She is still eating and drinking. I have not yet had to cull. I don't think that for her, living a life in a cage in my bathroom is much of a life. And putting her in with the rest of the flock and having the vent pecked at is the way to go either. Anyway, I'll keep trying for a few days before I give up. Thanks for your advice and support. Now out to treat the horse that's lame. When it rains it pours.........

Try not to feel to bad. These things happen. I lost another Barred Rock chick last night. Don't know what's wrong something in the genes with this line.

Take care

Have to agree. I was going to move these BR's chicks out but I'm afraid to. As you can see I've lost another chick and I have no idea why except that the genetics is off. They just don't thrive. Legs get skinny as tooth picks. I hope I don't lose anymore. Trylins are from the same line but they seem to be ok.

Ohmigosh..another one?! I'm so sorry!!

Don't you think its a bit possible too though, that the extra day in transit screwed with them? I mean, if the line is a bit iffy, then another day without food and water might well spell disaster? I don't know though...just a thought! Heaven knows they're spoiled rotten in that office of yours!!

These little fools of mine want to climb all over my hand the second it goes into the brooder box....they need to get their butts out to the garage..but that means..well...I can't even go there...just finally got the garage cleaned up!!! Arghhh!!!

Once I get back from NYC with my mother...I am going to start building the silkie coop..they need to get out of the garage NOW. I let them out to range everyday, but I just want them to have their own special coop...

That means I will have more room for the slw babies that are due to hatch at the end of the month!! YAY! LOL

Hmmmm... Do you use vitamins in the water? Mine get vitamin water till they move outside. I buy the 8oz Durvet Vitamin & Electrolyte powder from TSC - about 1/4tsp in a quart. By the time they're on gallon waterers I only use 1/2 tsp per gallon. I don't use medicated feed. Go ahead -- call me a new-age hippie freak! I know you want to!!

It's ok, it's probably true.

At any rate, I've had a few Dorkings from shipped eggs hatch out with curled toes the last 2 hatches. I added a dropperful of B Complex liquid vitamins to the waterer & put a few drops on the beak once or twice a day. The chick's toes from the previous hatch fixed themselves with no bandaid orthopedic shoe & I was unable to tell her from her sisters by the third day. I just treated the new chick this morning, so I'll know if it works in a few days. Had a weak silkie this morning too, and it got the same vitamin treatment. I can't tell which chick it was now. Honestly, I half expected it to be dead when I got home from work.

Is it just me, or do silkies smell worse than regular chicks? I've only had these chicks for 24 hours and I am ready to put them outside with the big girls, sink or swim. The smell is OUTRAGEOUS. I hardly knew the first set of chicks were there, these silkie chicks you can't miss the fact they are in the enclosed porch.

Came home and pushed the vent back in. she of course had laid another big brown egg(with blood spotted on it). When I go in she sings to me. My husband brought home some watermelon an strawberries for her. She is acting ok otherwise. How long should I keep trying?

Sorry to hear about your barred rock. I know these things happen, but I don't have to like it!!!!
Again, thanks for your support,
Ginny
