Ben Shaw is great two thumbs up! He's a tiny bit pricey (3.00/bird or rabbit) but totally worth it if you don't want to deal with it yourself! I'm just outside of Albany NY myself in Valley Falls

I have to hatch enough first , then process!!! Maybe in the fall. I just know if I have extra roos, I won't want to process them.

I'll poke my nose into this thread - I live just south of Saratoga and have used Ben Shaw twice - last summer for thirty Freedom Rangers and this spring for 14 extra roos. He is excellent!!! I will continue to use him - for me, he is well worth $3 a bird! By the time I'd buy or make the equipment I'd need to process them myself, plus the time and effort it would take - I'll drive forty minutes to Ben's, wait an hour and a half, and drive home, any time!

Rancher,
She is a giant white from mcmurray. She is just over a year old. I have her in the darkened bathroom to discourage egg production. What foods will also discourage egg production?
Thank you,
Ginny

Probably as little as possible. Soft foods like melon, scrambled eggs, lettuce and lots of water, just not layer feed. She might get runny stool but that's better than solid I guess. Try to keep everything back there clean and inside. Of course all of this is only to try to give her muscles some time to tighten up but honestly this type of thing usually is recurring from what I've read.

I've only had it happen once and by the time I found her it was to late and she had to be culled. Anyone else got anything that might help?

I hope things work out.

Rancher

Hello, welcome to this thread.

Do you want to meet a lot of chicken lovers? We are having a local gathering Aug 27th in Voorehesville...There is a thread about it in the chickenstock area. And a link to it in Happyhensny's signature line. Hope to see you there. (It's gonna be a swap, sale, potluck meal and chinese auction kinda day)

We take ours out to be processed too. We'll probably try it at home at some point, but the people we go to do an excellent job.

BTW -- I have to run to the PO to pick up my Dorking eggs!!!!!

Thanks Rancher. When I got up this morning, I had to push the vent back in again. I have some kale and clover started for the chickens. I'll nip off the tops and feed them to her. I had wondered about it recurring. I figured I'd try and get her put back together first. She is still eating and drinking. I have not yet had to cull. I don't think that for her, living a life in a cage in my bathroom is much of a life. And putting her in with the rest of the flock and having the vent pecked at is the way to go either. Anyway, I'll keep trying for a few days before I give up. Thanks for your advice and support. Now out to treat the horse that's lame. When it rains it pours.........
