Wow, you have silkies now too!! oo cute!

I had silkies, and I don't recall them smelling any worse.. unless maybe they have poo stuck to their feet?

Looks like I will have more babies soon that I really don't need - I have a broody that I gave four measly little eggs to and she's managed to steal eight more somehow. Argh!

Will have mystery mutt chickies in a few weeks if anyone is interested. My roo makes pretty feathery foot babies. Plus another hen is acting like she wants to go broody so I'll have to put some eggs under her too. I could try to break her, but I'm curious to see how these two do as chick moms.

Renee, isn't there someone that could bring them for you?

Good question -- I didn't ask anyone.

At this point, I'm ready to have a clearance sale!

Rene, Our two white chicks we purchased from you are doing fine. What else do you have
...clearance sale? Aria

Looking forward to the swap tomorrow. It'll be fun talking to everyone about their animals. I've been doing crafting in the spare minutes I usually use to be on the computer so I haven't been on much.

Welcome to all the new peeps!

Hello to all the old peeps!

I need 2 silkie hens to be my broodies. Of the 5 I bought I am only going to keep 2 hens. My neighbors might be interested in the other 3. If not, they will make an appearance at the Vooreshville Pot Luck at Annie's. I know that one of the silkies is a roo already...it has a COMB at 3 - 4 weeks of age. What else could it be?

These silkies have runny poo. I just started to give them medicated feed and will get them some vitamins tomorrow for them. They don't seem to be interested in Yogurt, but I will keep trying that too. I think their smell is from their poo not being normal. I have only had them for 24 hours (maybe 30)...it could be an adjustment to the water too. My indoor water runs through a softner and I am too lazy to go outside to get 2 quarts of water for the brooder waterers. The chicks Annie gave me are doing fine, so I don't know what's up with the silkies. I do know they are hatchery silkies. I don't think that I would have bought them if I knew they were hatchery....but whatever....I have them now, I just have to keep them alive until I can get them outside to the coop.

I do know that they eat a LOT more than the other chicks. They totally emptied an egg carton full of food between 3:30 pm and Bedtime. 5 of them. That's a LOT of food.

I'm glad that they're doing well!!

I have lavender & split Orps and lav & split ameraucanas.

Got DH to agree that it is time to build a pen in the woodshed for the chicks. Thank the freaking universe! He's afraid that they'll be cold and lonely out there
lol.png
I reminded him that the brooder lamp and heating pad will work out there just as well as they did in here. Everyone is pretty well feathered out now anyway. Talk about being a mother hen!

I'm just glad he likes them so much.
They're super cute and funny at this stage, and they really de-stress me. They're all cute, but those silkies... they really capture my heart

And Jack, well we decided that he really isn't a chicken. Maybe a little boy in a frizzle suit? Funny funny little man.

I hope everyone has a great time at the swap meet. There is a show at the fairgrounds next month? Are any of you all showing your birds?

Mine that are the same age as yours are in the grow out pen -- with a heatlamp of course! Get a little stool so sit can sit out there & talk to them!

Noah & I are planning on showing a few birds at the Fingerlakes Feather Club Show. He'll show his Dorkings. I'll show a few Silkies, Orps & Ameraucanas. I need to get saddles on a couple of the Ameraucana girls. We pulled the Orp boys out a few days ago so their girls can get back into shape. Right after breeding season is a tough time to show!

Sue-- have the entry forms gone out for the show yet?

I have 2 possibly 3 Brahma roos that need a new home. They are 5 weeks old. I am also looking for a few fertile eggs since one of my hens turned broody. Anyone interested please let me know.

I cant post pics because I am a new member and there is a warning saying "We have been having a big problem with spam and have had to temporarilly limit what brand new members can post. To continue, please reduce the number of URLs or images in your post to 0."
If interested I can email pics to you.

Or if anyone knows anywhere that would be interested I would really appreciate it TIA

Is the poo red tinged? They probably have Coccidia, I think I had to use medicated feed on all the silkie chicks I bought from a local breeder last year.
sickbyc.gif
I do believe that Coccidia will make an animals poo stink, I have zero sense of smell, so if it smelled different I would not be able to tell. Coccidia also destroys the lining of the intestine, which is why you sometimes get red poo and why they eat so much, they are not digesting all that they need out of their feed.

The down side of medicated feed is you have to be super careful what you do with those shavings! I always dump out mine in the compost pile and the chickens pick thru it, Last year I killed one duck and had another limp for a long time! Plus the eggs from the chickens made my hubby sick! I'm going to just medicate the water this year I think if I purchase chicks, I'm using Baycox this year, it kills the both the parasite and the ovacyst, while most Coccidiastats only inhibit the levels of the parasite. Not sure what Coccidiastat is in medicated feed though?

I have wondered though how do chicks GET it? Are they infected in the egg or do they infect themselves once they hatch?

Anyone going to the Bath auction next week?
