I'm so sorry to hear that Annie. How can they NOT see a crushed chick. Sheesh...we care for these birds so much we really don't need the extra stress of having them arrive dead.

Sorry you lost a little one. If you can bear to do it, put the chick in a ziplock bag in the freezer until it dries up enough to dig. You can wrap it in a little piece of clothe or paper towel so you don't have to look again when it's time.

I used to freeze little birds and critters that had fatal accidents around my yard for my biology professor (amature taxidermist) and it worked fine. He had a huge bird display at the biology building.

Don't beat yourself up about it. Sometimes all you can do is be caring and compassionate for the few days an animal has left and let it die feeling safe and calm.

My SO (ray) Dug a really really deep hole....well compared to a 2 week old chick....2 shovels full deep and we buried it as close to the duckling as we could walk in all this water. The older hens (can't say bigger cuz they are banties) came to the service. Of course they wanted WORMS...and whenever they see ray with a shovel they follow him. Figures doesn't it? I feed them daily, give them clean water and throw out the scratch to get them back in the coop and they follow HIM around the yard. LOL

I am only beating myself up because in hindsight I SAW that this chick wasn't 100% and I waited until it fell over to help it. I should have started treating it MUCH sooner. If I had, I might have saved it.

Every day I learn something new. Today I learned how much it hurts to lose something so little. Tomorrow I hope to learn something a little more upbeat.
