Actually, come to think of it, has anyone ever seen Mayor H.R. Pufnstuf and Mayor Gerald D. Jennings in the same place at the same time? Hmm...

I wonder if you can get around the ordinances (or Albany, lol) with NYS's Right to Farm law? I dunno what it says or where to find it, just know we have one, lol

We live out in the boonies but apparently in town they are only supposed to have so many pets and can't have roosters.

A friend of mine used it to get around town ordinances, he also put up "temporary" buildings so he wouldn't get taxed on stuff. My buildings are all temporary buildings, of course. I *could* move them, I just don't.

Now I would LOVE to put up a barn, but then I would need permits and all that jazz, if my husband would just give up and let me have the whole garage, all would be well. Silly man still thinks at some point he'll get to use it again.

I had a hen hatch out 7 chicks today (Did I mention I am overrun with stuff?) so I had to find a spot for her so there would be an empty nestbox for the other chickens, nothing yet from the eggs I saved from the nest of the hen who got eaten, and nothing from the hen who picked the worlds worst nesting spot.

I have invented a fun new game, I call it "Duckling Rescue, Toss and Run" Which involves saving ducklings many times per day from all the spots they get IN to but can't get back OUT of, dodging an attack duck while catching the little buggers, then tossing said duckling at her while running in the opposite direction.

did any one lose any chickens to the heat today? i lost 3 of 4 month old silkies to the heat. i misted them twice and fresh water twice. they were the only ones panting out of everyone. the more i begin to like them the more i hate them. the coop temp was running 95-96 and outside temp 93-94. i am afraid to admit it but my 2 showgirl chicks are probly going to be living in the house all winter.

Sorry to hear about your silkies. My coop isn't finished so mine are still in the house with a fan on to try to keep them cool. One of the bigger ones was panting a bit, but all are okay.

The little roos are starting to crow and it's funny to wake up with chickens squawking in the house

I didn't lose any, but I am fortuante that my coop and run are in the shade all day...sun only gets it after 6 pm.

This isn't my idea, but it might help you with the heat. Freeze some 1/2 gallon/gallon/quart milk carton of water and put them out in the shade for the chickens to cozy up to. I freeze cool whip bowls of ice and put them in the waterers so the water stays cool and give them ice cold water melon to eat. (I found some accidently frozen swiss chard in the back of the fridge and gave them that today also.).

Someone else said they put fans in their coop. If you have power you could open the windows and try to blow the hot air out the door.

My silkies are white. My Marans were panting more than the Silkies, they are black.

Oh what a shame.

I feel for you. Mine are panting away and I am placing ice in their waterers as well as cold treats when I can. Their run and coop is mostly tree shaded so they get to dig down in the cool dirt to cool off. I hope the rest stay OK for you.

dont quite under stand how i lost them never lost anything to heat before in 10 years ive had chickens. but ive only had silkies for the last 2 years. i just think silkies are too fragile. my coop is in the shade and windows stay open day and night. i misted them at 1pm before i left and and they were dead by 6 pm when i got home. i just think silkies are so evil they make you love them and hate them just as much.
