NY chicken lover!!!!

As I understand it.............asian folks use the meat to make a "broth" as there really is NO meat.:<) It supposedly has medicinal/special qualities and is considered a delicacy here. I've not tried it myself so have no first hand knowledge. They have hatchery silkies in the chicken markets in brooklyn that the asian restuarants buy for their special recipees. My friend drives by at times and rescues/buys some of the juveniles when she can.
I have one here and she has not a feather on her huge blue legs/feet. Snow Cone is her name. She is adorable and I jkust couldn't bring myself to taste her.

We have been meaning to dispatch a Silkie Roo for the better part of a few months now. He's the only mean rooster I own...probably because he wasn't hand raised by me.

I have no problem butchering him (and by me I really mean my husband) but I don't know what to make that would look appetizing! Would blue/black chicken and biscuits win over the fam?

That's my problem. I have NO problem eating my extra roos, but I have a REAL problem with the black skin, veins and bones in a silkie.

So far I have one given away and one traded for 2 mean roos that will go immediately to freezer camp. Of course they aren't actually GONE yet....just people saying they want them.

I am sure they would sell at an auction, but I don't have the time or inclination to take them to one.

I don't get to Syracuse much, sorry! Gas prices, ya know? I used to go to a lot more rabbit shows last year too but the economy is just beating me down here, can't afford the gas to get there or the fees to show the rabbits.

I'm debating about selling all of the chickens and ducks, even the breeding stock. I'm tired of having to keep replacing things and not being able to afford to buy anything to properly house and keep them safe...

Anyways, another Runner is gone. Seriously, I think I am done.

Cass, I posted an answer and can't find it. Did you receive?

I have 4 new Buff Chicks 3 months old and don't know if any are roosters. Too soon to Tell.
If I do have a Buff Rooster I would like to trade for Bantam White Rooster you have.

Let's wait an see? Regards, Aria

Syracuse or Rochester area... Where do you buy your feed from and how much is it?

I'd prefer the Syracuse area because that's where I live but I travel to Rochester to see my parents about once every 2 weeks.

Thanks!

I didn't catch your reply, but these roosters aren't going anywhere fast. One person already backed out on me. Decided she wanted a "colorful" roo, not a white one. GRRrrr...

So, I still have 3 roosters that are sweet as pie that need homes. If they don't go soon, I am gonna have to get over my fear of black skin and eat them.

Some hugs to make you feel better. It is so frustrating to not be able to do things how you want - and then to have something attack your innocent birds.

Been there, but not a fun place. Hope things come together for you sooner than later so you can enjoy your birds and not have to sell them all. They are such a joy.

I am sorry for your loss. I too have some I put the cart before the horse with. That's the thing with chickens. They're just to easy to acquire and before the coop or arrangements for housing are in place. I do hope you have a better time finding buyers than I'm having. Right now I have posted two Orp roos from hinkjc farms and not takers. These are nice big guys too.

Look on the bright side you can start again after you have all the protection in place. Lord have mercy I'm always giving chicks away each year or at the very least selling them cheap. Just remember no matter what you do your going to have to fight the vermin anyway. Make sure you have a plan whether trap , shoot or prevention.

Take care and I wish you the best,

rancher
