So many people got hammered down state and center state with the rain. My prayers for everyone's safety and a quick recovery.

Hi folks , still working on a Green fire Farms order.

So I thought that IF Green Fire requires a 12 chick order and since I want Swedish Flower hens that are $19 each I could order 6 and that would leave 6 chicks left to order. If you'd like to order chicks that are $99 each and you and friends or friends wanted to order the same breed you could order 3 chicks, 1 each for a total of $99 each. etc. etc. I think the odds are pretty good you'd get at least one pullet and then if you shared the eggs you could hatch enough for the group. You could each raise your own chick or chicks and then come together for breeding and dividing the eggs for hatching.

Now if there are those who want to order more than the six I can reduce my Swedish Flower hen order to accomodate them. Seriously I'd like to order some others too such as the Red Orpingtons, or Hedemora or Isbars. So I will probably order less Swedish Flower hens anyhow. Cream Legbars are nice but I can get "blue" eggs from the Ameraucana breed. My EE lays blue and large size too.

From what I'm readying the Chocolate orpingtons can be bred to blacks, so that should work for anyone who has blacks. They are bantams but that should not be a problem for someone who has black bantams.

Spring will be here before you know it so give it some thought. All money will have to be paid before the order is done so I don't get stuck with a $1000 order of course. I will contact Green Fire to see if a mixed order is possible.

Hello everyone hope everyone is weathering the nasty weather we are having. I have started searching for a LGD and I am not having much luck finding any breeders. I have only been able to locate a breeder just south of Syracuse that breeds Akbash dogs I will be going out sometime to look at there adult dogs soon. I would also be interested in Anatolians, or Kangals. If anyone has any ideas where I could find any of the three breeds I would greatly appreciate it. Again hope everyone is doing ok with all the rain I here central and Eastern NY got hit pretty bad yesterday here in Western NY we got off pretty easy.

We were on the western "edge" from what I can tell, but I had to "sneak" into work because Tompkins County was in a state of emergency. (I have to drive about a half mile into the county to get to work!)

I was considering English Shepherds too (I think there is a breeder in Albany), but I think I have decided that I need a larger breed to protect against predators, even though it does seem like a waste to get such a big dog for poultry alone!

Do most show breeders Vac? (and for what?) I'd like to get around to getting NPIP and showing next year and I don't want to bring home germs!

The myth is that you can only vaccinate day old chicks. You can actually vaccinate your birds at any age. The difference is that as every day goes by, you run a greater risk of your birds being exposed to the virus before you have a chance to vaccinate. Two more myths are that you can’t mix vaccinated and unvaccinated chicks together and that you can give your flock Mareks by exposing them to vaccinated chicks. Since the Mareks vaccine is actually the Turkey virus, you cannot give your birds Mareks by vaccinating. Also, vaccinated chicks cannot hurt unvaccinated chicks by mixing them together. My personal practice is to ‘booster’ my adults every year when I vaccinate my chicks – day old or otherwise.​

My understanding is that vaccinated birds can still get chicken Mereks but will not express (or show symptoms) of the disease. However, if exposed, they can then be shedders of the virus and a source of infection to unexposed/unvaccinated birds.

Talk about crazy...I removed the lattice off my back porch and placed that on 5 gallon white buckets around the chicken pasture. The other group of chickens are currently on my front lawn with access to the underneath of my front porch and my front overgrown flower bed. good thing I don't really care what my neighbors think, most of them already know that I am b bit nuts!

I have woods and blow downs to me are skinny trees or branches. 3-4" around or more 8 feet or more long. What every works. I just figured any type of "grid" that would block preds from flying in and landing or taking off. You could use a series of T bar like posts strung like clothes lines too. As long as you can get under them. You can modify to whatever works for you.

Or better yet a grape arbor with wild grapes would be cool too.

As for the Lemon orps. I would be more leery of buying from one of the sites rather than a private farm like Green Fire. They are nice for sure but like I said I can't afford 12 chicks by myself. So if there is anyone considering going in on an order with me start saving your change. You could also ask family to donate to your greenfire fund for holidays and birthdays.
