For worming I use eprinex topical. It kills external mites and things like gapeworm, as well as internal worms, and no egg withdrawal.

Does TSC sell the eprinex?

I am pretty sure it does. It's locked up at my TSC - you have to ask for it. It's not cheap, as I recall. Dose is on here somewhere, but I think it's .5cc on the back of the neck for standards and .25 for bantams (it's been a while since I used it). One bottle will last you a looong time, so split it with nearby friends.

My silkies never roosted. Just huddled in the corner all together. I suspect that 5th toe has them confused as to what to do with their feet on a roost.

A SPACE HEATER? With wood chips. That one really has a bird brain.

Yes this is true. TSC does sell it and the dose is correct. If you live in a wet area I suggest worming twice a year at least. There is no egg tossing with this med, so it's safe to use. If you only worm once a year I suggest fall when hens are laying off for a while.

Yup. They do growl. WHEN they growl, you might want to move your hand quick like, cuz they mean business. My silkie growled every time I picked her up to check under her for "new" eggs (meaning those without X's indicating the ones she was sitting on). I just told her to quiet the he** down and I would be done in minute. After a few times she used that "egg checking" time to run out and poop, eat a couple mouthfuls and suck down some water. Then she would come back and look at me with the stink eye until I put her back on the eggs. Yup, she was too lazy to get back on the nest herself.

So I'm brand new to this chicken raising stuff. I have two laying hens and 5 young pullets which are not yet laying. All this talk about worming has me a bit worried. Especially when there's talk of injecting medicine into the chickens neck. No way would I even dare to try doing that ! Yikes ! What to do ? Is this something that I should learn about right away ? Going to feel pretty dumb calling a vet to the house to give my 7 chickens a shot but I'll do whatever you all suggest.

So much to learn !

Thanks all

Hi Lille! Welcome! You don't have to inject the medicine into their neck. It's very similar to the flea stuff for cats and dogs. You just put the drops on their neck, no needle and no vet required! Truth be told, I only do it when needed, but it's very simple to do.

Whew ! I was getting pretty worried ! I get woozy pulling a splinter. Giving a chicken a shot would have been pushing the limit !

Any suggestion about just which medicine I should get and do you recommend that I too use it only as needed ? ( Although I'm not sure I'm smart enough to know when that's the case )

Thanks !
