NY chicken lover!!!!

I figue nothing ventured, nothing gained. Such is life!

I've been cheering myself up the approved chicken-keeping way - by looking at chicks on the hatchery sites!

I have two acres, so I may as well make good use of them. I'm pretty sure I want a couple more Leghorns, so they'd come from Meyer. For other breeds, though, I'd much rather keep the business on BYC by buying hatching eggs or chicks. So, who's breeding what in the spring?

Wow!! great egg!
So 90 g is just under 3 oz? I have a leghorn too! She is amazing. Still popping them out at about 4 a week when everyone else quit about a month ago.

Anybody ever do artificial insemination? I would love to breed her with a blue egger to see what kind of eggs I would get from the match. I really don't want another rooster though. The 2 I currently have are enough!

Come borrow my black Ameruacana roo in the spring. Then give him back. I don't think we live that far apart. My Black Roos came directly from Jean (pips & peeps) so he's a good quality Ameruacana and a really nice boy, too boot.

Thanks Cass! I may take you up on the offer. Don't you want to try A.I.? I'll try anything once(ok maybe twice). check it out.......

Lord willing...oh, and the roos cooperate....I hope to either be hatching or have blue eggs. ALL my Ameruacana hens are Lav and I have a Lav and black roo. If I have an extra Lav roo you can have him for your blue egg layer. Seems that Ameruacana roos are pretty quiet. But then "quiet" is subjective. My other roos were SOOOO loud my neighbors could hear them (and there is 3 acres between us.)

You are welcome to some of my eggs. I don't want any money for them, at this point...but would like to trade for a chicken I can eat (extra roo) or a chick or two you just don't want to grow out.

Yeah, I'll try it, right after I figure out how the heck you can get the sperm. I know how to get bull semen...which probably works for most mammals...but BIRD semen? Not so sure how to get that.

Edited to add: Ok, I watched the video. Those were small roosters. I am not sure mine would stay still long enough to yeild results. However you are welcome to bring your hen, milk my roo and try it. Would be interesting, to say the least.

I'll be hatching buckeye eggs. I am considering purchasing eggs because I have been thinking about only breeding hens in their second season or older. I have 2 pullets hatched in june and one in the spring of 2010. Depending on how many eggs the older hen is putting out, I may just hatch my own......we shall see...... I WILL BE HATCHING SOMETHING!!
