NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm hatching out some LIght sussex chicks split to Coronation today. I just realized I don't need them and if anyone is interested at $5 a chick, let me know. I forgot to put up an auction....
This is what you might call a "fire sale" LOL There will be pure coronation and sussex split to coronation chicks, and no, I cannot tell them apart at this age.
I will say this, I am hardly seeing any light sussex at show, so these chicks that turn out to be the light sussex can be show as light sussex and will probably do well because there is no competition.
They lay well and are calm birds, good for 4H.

Last weekend inn Mass. at the NE Poultry Congress, I had the only Light Sussex in the show of over 1,200 birds if that gives you an idea.

I'm in Vernon, NY

Is there a reason for this pairing of Sussex?

Breeding light sussex to Coronation sussex gives you one or the other physically, but the ones that look like the light sussex, will be split to Coronation genetically. Nothing mixed up. Its the Columbian gene, with the blue & black.

The resulting light sussex will be split to Coronation, so breeding them together will give you both in the offspring. Then, if you want to continue with them separate, you can, or keep interbreeding them.

I am gong to have 2 separate flocks and breed them separately when I have enough of the Coronation Sussex.

I missed this but Hubby will be processing the birds, he can do that for me. I will learn how but really it will be I'm and 2 or 3 of the kids. I have 2 that I know will help and do a good job not sure about the other we will see. I am not sure what kind of rooster I want, I know I want some JG and maybe sussex but I have to see what happens with my easter eggers. I have 6 girls and 4 different breeds already lol.

Some one recommended "Open Air Poultry Houses for All Climates" by Prince Tannat Woods. I haven't ordered it yet but will. It looks really good. That's a very nice building you've got.

Don't need any chicks. I have 16 coming up. 8 SFH's and 8 Marans, 4 of which are roos. I'll have to keep them all to breed with before I get rid of them. Black Birchens

I have a friend with two hoop houses and she has nothing on the front of her. I can't believe it. Me I put felt but the humidity is high though the temp was 40*. The water in the run doesn't freeze only at night. Depending on how cold it gets.

I think a dirt floor is best though mine is up off the ground as it gets to wet here. I keep thinking of Ducks. Lord help me.

Welcome !
Hi everyone!
I'm new here, but have been reading this New York thread to learn as much as I can about how to take care of my chickens in this climate. You all have been very helpful, so thank you.
I have six girls, 4 RIR and 2 BR, they are from Lee's Feeds, a great place. I wanted pretty chickens that are not too difficult to raise as I learn. I adore my chickens, and my husband likes them too. He has built them a lovely coop, predator proof and cozy, although it is not finished to his aesthetic wishes, maybe in the spring.
My girls have lots of personality, and I entertain my long suffering friends with their antics...and they are giving us 3-4 eggs a day still since it is their first winter. We can't eat that many, so I deal eggs in the locker room at the gym!
I'm loving life in CNY.

Good Morning!
Ever have those mornings where you wish you were still sleeping? That's me this morning.
Went down to the barn to do chores, everyone was happy to get their chow. It's so nice to have someone be so excited to see you. I have to wake my girlies up soon to get ready for school.

Does anyone know how much it costs to be NPIPcertified. I want to donate fertile eggs to preschool and read I need this certification. I live in onondaga county. Believe it or not someone from cayuga county cooperative extension would also like some eggs

NPIP does not cost anything but they cannot test until the temperature is warm enough (I do not know the lowest temp) maybe 58*? It has something to do with the reactant (sp?) Why do you need to be NPIP to donate hatching eggs? I wasn't and donated without any problem. I am certified now and the schools do not ask.
