NY chicken lover!!!!

I hear you on Getting farm related items with a car. My 2003 Corrolla is called a FUV (Farm Utility Vehicle) Between Shaving, Grain, and animals, it is quite the sight at times.

I wanted a truck, but with a new born and all we went with a suv.

Framac.
Good morning all and welcome newbies (I'm a displaced upstate NYer from Ithaca so I'm tolerated here). Living on Long Island I need a 22 for the neighbors not the coons. Great photos everyone. My friend that I gave my Black copper marans to last summer has eggs that should start hatching on Fri. I can't wait. She said I can have a hen if she gets an extra. He is a beautiful creature. He is still healing from the fox attack on Monday. I picked up all the feathers he lost and plan to send them to my brother since he ties his own flies. Well out to take care of the girls (and 2 remaining boys) just can't believe I can't even give them away.

One last thing maybe I can get some suggestions . I need a new automobile. My husband wants me to get a SUV type thing. I WANT A TRUCK..... I've had two and now with owning chicks. I think I need another one.Last week when I went to Agway I had to tie the food to the roof racks since I had two bales of straw in the trunk. You should see what my VW beetle's tuunk looks like. Its 11 years old. It looks like a small feed store exploded in it. Most times its either his way or the highway. Sure do miss my dad ; if he was alive we'd go truck shopping. Can you buy a car with American Express? Wish me luck....Carol

my farm truck.

Love it! I want one! =)

Thankfully the local Agway delivers for free so I just had a nice man bring over 15 bags of chicken food and a bunch of shavings and park them nicely in my garage. If I had a truck, however, I might go over to the feed mill - right now it costs me more in gas than the savings I'd get and I could only fit about 5 bags in my Jeep. :p

I make my living building furniture, so my planer gives me all the shavings I need. Most of the time. Once a year I do a huge cleanout and line my truck bed (8 feet x 6 feet incidentally) with tarps and get a huge load of planer shavings from a local mill. They pack it in tight. I get 3 good total deep litter cleanouts of 6 coops with that.

Queenie, I don't think it's wise to have a gun on LI. My husband grew up in Huntington, and on our trips there if I had had a gun on the LIE, I could be raising chickens in one of those nice penitentaries.

On vehicles, I have a Honda Element which with good planning can fit a lot of stuff, the back seats flip up, or can even be removed pretty quickly. My husband has a 3/4 ton pickup with a cap, the long bed version. Unfortunately he has a bed liner in it which is like a nice carpet and won't let me near it to get chicken or garden stuff. He says that the grit I would leave behind could scratch some of wood he uses...we seem to have a role reversal thing going on.

The element cleans up easily, if I were to want to do that. I hear they are not making them any more.

When is the next auction around here? I have bunnies and roosters to get rid of, lol Isn't there one someplace in March??? Did anyone go to the Canandaigua auction last week, wondering how the prices were.

Of course, if anyone wants something, you're welcome to come get it, I have LH crosses and poorly colored Ameraucana Roosters!

When we were first putting up our pasture fence I had an Elantra. I folded down the seats and loaded it right up with 6 foot T posts. I have an Ion now and I've brought home a couple loads of scrap wood from work the same way. The last load surprised my DH because of how much I crammed into it.

Maden - thanks for the thoughts. Yes I love the warmth but worked outside yesterday and made me a little painful, but I've got stuff to do and I am determined to have the SFH's and Marans moved to their respective coops by the week end.

Now I will say this. I ahve two Birchen Marans roos on CL but if anyone here wants one or both they are Free to BYC members. I have four and I can promise chicks next year or hatching eggs to who ever takes them.

I just don't have the energy to grow them out and eat them nor will I take them to an auction with gas prices the way they are. I can't see spending $20-30 in gas, to sell a chicken for $5. If that.
If my older brother were still alive he'd just take their heads off.

Anyhow headed to HD for 2x3's

ta, ta for now,

Rancher

(ta, ta it looks like rain, ta ta it looks like rain) can you guess which movie that line is from?

Tut-tut, it looks like rain, Tut-tut, it looks like rain was said by Winnie the poo I think...Who said tata it looks like rain?

Any of you New Yorkers have pea-eggs? What are they called? Peacock eggs? Peahen eggs? LOL. A friend of mine is looking for some to hatch out on her farm. It seems like a two legged predator came and took her Peacock.

Thanks for the raccoon tips. I was kind of lumping in the supplies I need. Figure the air gun would take out a rat or a small possum. We've been trapping those, too. I need to look into the gun laws/information here so we can get something a little more serious down the road.

I'd also like to look into snaring a raccoon.....I'll head over to the Predator and Pests section! :)
