NY chicken lover!!!!

just candled. down from 37 to 34. 3 of the questionable eggs I put back were indeed early quitters. The 4th is either a lagger, or just died later. Lockdown, Saturday noontime. About 1/2 of those eggs are Sumatra. Got the porch ready Cass?

in a couple weeks i'll be selling, cochins, silkies, brahmas, and more. I've got to get a light brahma roo and buff bearded silkie roo. i'm going to be lookin for them at the auction. I hope they have ones that look good enough for my flock.

Itsy, the word "snaring" scares me. I hope you don't mean a leg trap. They are mad enough being stuck in the Havahart trap, you DON"T want to handle one of those nasties!!
There's a peep, Jimmythechicken, he's in CT, he breeds peafowl, but it is a little early for them, yet.

I think Snaring anything in NYS is illegal? So if ya do, keep it on the down low! :O I think snares are better suited to coyotes and foxes? I have yet to catch a raccoon with a box trap, caught my own stuff PLENTY of times! Sacha corners Possums for me so I can kill them, I'm waiting for those Great Pyrenees to come back again, they're not leaving here alive if I get my hands on them (Proof that no good deed goes unpunished!)

I really need to start looking for a pup, sigh. I really did not want to have to be training a puppy while I have a baby, but there is just no way we're going to be able to afford an electric fence, looks like I am going to opt for invisable fencing/LGD and maybe electric poultry netting for around the pens.

Ready? Ready, you ask? I have 11 chicks in one side of it already. What's the hold up? LOL

Ray built my brooder...it's about 5 feet long and 3 feet wide with 2 dividers for the center....held up by wood, not just stuck in there...one divider is wood to keep the heat on one half of it when I am brooding small chicks and/or small numbers of chicks....the other divider is hardware cloth that fits snuggly in the same slot as the wood.....I use that when I have both sides full of chicks so they can see each other.

The Hardware cloth is a little short...no sure how that happened, I measured once and cut twice and it's still too short....sometimes the little ones can get over the top into the other side. It's usually humourous to watch, but the little one needs a rescue after a short time. The LOUD cheeping is the audio clue to "help me, I'm over the top and can't get back".

Ugh! one of my runs is nasty mud after all this rain. I gotta work on that tomorrow. I think the girls were digging holes in it for the winter and now it's nasty and yucky. :p

I just had to go out there in my 'nasty muck boots'.. bleh. Got 22 eggs today tho!

My incubator came today. It said it would hold 4 chicken eggs....yeah, RIIIIGHT....try 3 D'uccle eggs or 2 LF eggs....so I best get 100% hatch rate or I will have a lone chick. I have eggs in it already, it took less than 15 minutes to come "up to temp"....does that tell you how small it is. LOL

I got 5 eggs today....where are the rest of the eggs? I have 10 laying hens down there but only 5 eggs. I do think they are being overbreed and therefore too stressed to lay. One's back is almost bare. She needs to stop squatting and throw those boys off.

Does anyone want this flipping roo? 100% Ameruacana. Black. Medium sized, but LF.

No, i don't have an extra. Chief is bantam and if anybody wants some eggs from him i'll be selling. Also, does anybody go to the auction in Schylerville. It's near the Washington County fair. Or do any of you go to the tailgate sale at schaticoke fair. it's the last sunday in april or fist sunday in may. if you do, let me know.

HA,HA I was going to ask if you know about the schylerville auction because I am going to sell my birds there on march 24, 31 or April 7. I have not made up my mind and I will be selling my splash Cochin's that are not inbreed yet. they are 7 to 8 months old, the males have very nice dark coloring If you want pics of them. I will post them here or you can PM me your email and we can see if we can do something!!! by the way, my mom does not know I am on BYC so we will have to make it look like we just met if thats ok with you.

maybe we can make a trade??? what kinds of birds and colors are you going to sell??

A 4 egg incubator? how cute! :)

I have 40 hens and only got 22 eggs, but that's ok. I keep thinking I need to sell my oldest layer coop girls but they were 7/7 today!

I have a black americauna roo to give away too, LOL. Actually, he's part of a mixed group of blue eggs that were marked as americauna, araucana and EE. He has a tail, but could be tailed araucana also. Ah well. I plan on keeping the rumpless one that looks roo-ish.

Did you see my pic earlier of my superbroody? She's getting more feisty lately. She better not want chicks yet!

I saw the pic, she's beautiful. I definately want her if you are going to rehome her. I can handle 3- 4 times a year broody....I'll just give her only 3 -4 eggs, so I don't wind up on *your* show...Chicken HOARDERS...
