NY chicken lover!!!!

I was just watching cook's country on PBS. I love cooking shows. They make me want to cook and share. Now if I could persuade DH to have a chicken folk get together so I could cook.

I have you down for hosting next year....this year I am still seeking a host/hostess.....Some of the people on this thread are going to be able to go to MA or NH gathering....but for a lot of us those gatherings are just to far away for a day trip....and as we all know, finding a "chicken sitter" is hard.....I am hoping to find someone in the Mid-part of NY to host a gathering.....(Again, I would host but have NO PARKING on my land cuz of septic tank being at bottom of driveway blocking access to rest of 3 acres, but I WILL help organize, catagorize, prioritize...heck, even idolize...with anyone who does step up to host)

Post items for buy, sell or trade in the BST section of the forum only, please.

Dear Staff:

We, the population of this thread, are constantly asking marquisella what she has "in stock" or "to sell" or "to trade". Those of us who frequent this thread appriciate that she takes the time to inform us of what is going on with her flock and are NOT offended by her posts. IF her post was flagged, please investigate how long the flagger has been on BYC before asking her to stop posting her items on this thread, because we ASK HER TO. Perhaps it was a newbie that just doesn't understand how this thread operates.

Personally I have only gone to the BST thread twice...both times were very very frustrating because everything I wanted to obtain was way to far away to actually aquire. SOooo I (and many others) count on our local chicken folk to let us know, on the NY thread, what they have available. My entire flock has been found on this thread....Happyhensny, featherz and stonykill being the ones who have let "us" know what they have and I have contacted them to get my birds.

Yes, we could PM people who speak of having birds we would like to own and ask them if they have anything currently available....but how time consuming for both parties would THAT be, really? A quick post here to the "locals" and everyone knows what is where and who has what.

Sooooo....hmm...what else can I say?

Dear Marquisella,

Unless they are threatening to throw you off the entire forum PLEASE continue to post what you have available for sale/trade on our little local thread...I and many others count on that information being right here on the thread we frequent. Please don't stop letting us know...and someday, I promise, I will finally have the money to obtain one or two of your wonderful birds and we will get to meet face to face.

Thanks,

Cass

Can I get an "AMEN" to postings that contain "I have XYZ currently available" on this thread?

Allow me a couple of comments? They have Emu chicks on CL here for $150 each. Not sure what the draw is to keep such big birds. Nor what a dozen eggs are worth or will fetch.
I'd be happy to get $2.50 a doz for my eggs though they are only large. I don't keep hybrids but have considered it.

As for Blueberries and other stuff, you can grow quite a bit on a small plot of land. Gardening is not that hard nor that time consuming once the base is established. The hardest part for me is the harvest.
For $48 I got 15 Raspberry, 5 Gooseberry and 4 Red Currant plants at Country Max last year. If I get even half of what was on the plants at the farm where I picked them last year I will have plenty for my household. I didn't buy the Blueberry plants since I don't like them but probably should force myself to eat them since they are a healthy berry. But I think you get my point. I paid at least $140- 150 for berries last year to make jelly and jams. I had plenty to give away as gifts too.

If you are even thinking of a garden read my postings and see the pictures of my garden. You can do it.
I have been gardening for years. Started out helping my Dad when I was little, have my own now. I've always gardened in rows, right now the area I have available is about 25 x 25 ft. I am thinking of raised beds for this year and more of a square foot gardening methof. What do you think?

I think it is the ONLY way to garden, personally....that is being said after 25 years of "row" gardening. My back is getting to hold to hoe all those rows...when you go square foot/raised beds you only have a few weeds to pull and with the chicken poo your yeilds will be the same as spacing things out....

The whole reason for spacing things out is to give every plant ample space to get nutrients from the soil to grow. You add chicken manure to the mix and the plants don't need the same amount of space to get nutrients cuz the poop has them available in concentrated form....meaning you can concentrate your plants.

If you want to come over and see what I did last year you are welcome to do so....and I got a LOT of produce out of a LITTLE space. (remember there are only 2 of us eating this "lot" LOL)
The only thing I plan to do differently this year is to put more space between my cabbages.....they were knocking their little heads together and had to grow UP, which made for some really weird shaped heads.

edited to add: I am not rancher, but I have an opinion on everything. LOL

Oh Cass, that would be great! I am trying to figure out how many, how big beds I will need and what to plant where. I was thinking 4 - 4 x 8 beds. I am going to call Stemples saw mill in Berne to see what they charge for hemlock boards, I've heard hemlock does not need to be treated and lasts a decent time. Do you "plan" where you plant everything. I've always been a puut it where it fits kind of planter. I am hoping to get organized this year.

"AMEN" from me. I wouldn't buy anything off the for sale trade section of BYC now since they changed it.
www.poultrybid.com has a better auction system from what I can tell just by looking.

I, too, would rather have a local post in their local thread.
It is comforting knowing you are buying from a neighbor, and just maybe, you would buy from someone even if you weren't looking for said product.
I myself, have bought chicks from Sue even though I didn't need all of them, because she is a great person to deal with, and I know her chicks are quality that has been raised right.
So amen to your post, Cass.
