NY chicken lover!!!!

Happyhensny: How is the new addition to the home? Any word from the PO?

I had some chicks hatch yesterday. A lot didn't make it due to the power being off for 6 hrs two weeks ago...I tried to keep them warm..

I suppose I should introduce myself rather than silently stalking this thread. :) I live in Central NY and BYC was recommended by former HS classmate admhotel. I have 3 senior horses, 2 indoor cats, a 20 month old red-headed little girl and a husband that thinks I'm crazy all on 20 rolling (not flat) acres. Hubby is interested in getting chickens for eggs, I am also looking for temperment/personality, hardiness and overall quality. When I start talking breeds, I get the eye roll and reminded that they are 'just chickens'. Should have seen the look I got when I mentioned the August get-together...
Plan was to buy a small variety (9-15 pullet chicks) from Meyer's, but have now waited too long and first available order to get the mix of breeds I want is mid-June. New plan is go to TSC chick days and hope for the best when I pull them out of the bin. (625 chicks to be delivered to the Cortland TSC on 4/2). Or see what everyone has available here. :) My wish list is: Australorp, Orpington, Dominique, Sussex (speckled), Welsummer, Wyandotte (GL/SL), Ancona and some Easter Eggers. No coop yet, but with this wonderful weather, hope to get something started in the next few weeks. Until then, I have some spare space in the horse barn!b
I can get my hands on some nice quality Australorp eggs!..in 21 days they will be chicks!? I may have Lav or blk orpingtons...HappyhensNY has some B/B/S hatch this week..I hope to see her next week...just sayin'

Good luck! Wish I had room for a Araucana...hmm

I have a rumpless araucana cockerel if anyone wants him! freeeeeee! :P Also have a little EE cockerel, black.. Not really sure if he's EE/tailed araucana as I had both in the hatch eggs but both chicks came out of blue eggs. Can't keep both, so PM me if anyone is interested.

My rooster is here! So - it's not an Araucana like I thought - He's an Ameraucana from his Duke University line. This fellow does not have a traditional pea comb or bearded/muffed, but I'm pleased with him. He's BEAUTIFUL and is going to make me some nice Easter Egger babies with my 10 girls. So far, one of my EE gals has taken a liking to him as well as my pardon'd Red Broiler. I can't wait to see what those chicks are going to look like. I have ten girls: 2 barred rocks, 1 white leghorn, 2 Easter Eggers (one that lays a more blue egg and the other an olive colored egg), 1 small Red Broiler, 1 Golden Comet, 1 Black Jersey Giant, 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte and 1 Mille Fleur D' Uccle.

I hear he's nice and gentle with his ladies. I've seen him mate two girls thus far and he did a good job. He's also very alert. I'm so happy! So what would you call that comb? A sort of pea comb? I'm told that he does indeed produce blue egg layers.

Edited to add: The more I read about Ameraucana standards - the more I realize that this dude is really a male EE. lol. Either way, I love him!!!!!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE'S SO PRETTY!!!!!!!

WHERE DID YOU GET HIM??? IS HE GOOD WITH OTHER ROOSTERS??? I ASK BECAUSE I AM LOOKING FOR ONE LIKE HIM!!!!!!!!!

Ooooo, I've been intrigued by the B/B/S orpingtons. I like unique colors. (look - shiny objects!) Hubby already stated that we are not getting into breeding chickens. HAHAHAHA. I didn't want any roos the first year, until we figured out which breed(s) we liked best of the group and then add a roo or two. But if straight run is the only option, then we will be having a roo or two to start.

Tab & Trav - what kinds to you have now or coming up?

On another note, we seem to have acquired a barn rooster. Belongs to our Amish neighbors, rogue rooster escaped the shed they are closed in and they haven't been able to catch him. Now that the weather is warmed, horse barn doors are open and he has discovered the grain dropped on the floor by my 33-year-old. Little girl thinks it is great to go visit the chickys and ponies every night.
a 33 YO horse! You weren't kidding when you said "senior" .

The post office near me is great.. I call them at 530 AM to watch for my eggs coming in today and they immediately knew who I was and told me my number is on their bulletin board.. Umm.. is that a good thing or a bad thing?

when you have eggs coming in it is a good thing!!

I forgot to tell you, only 10 of the Sumatra's hatched. I see some of your pennie's freeing up..........

Awww, that's sad...I really needed a dozen since I am giving some to Happyhensny's daughter. Well, I'll take the 10 and cry about it later.

Eggs? Thought you had enough chicks? Oh well, there's always room for more when you have your kind of land. You planning a "coop raising" any time soon?

Good idea, but my incubator fit inside the auto turn cradle. The cradle is skeletal and there is nowhere to put the eggs w/o the incubator. It is a brinsea octogon. But thanks for the advice.

Tabatha and or Travis, feel free to butt in. The eggs are for you!!

Whoops...yeah..major difference from that to an LG turner..LOL!
