NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm looking for a couple, maybe a trio of ducks that lay a lot of eggs, and taste good just for my own consumption. I have no idea about ducks,so I am in the dark about what breeds would be the most suitable.....Anyone?

our Pekins lay a lot of eggs from January to November. HUGE eggs. They are also a large duck. 9 to 10 lbs. I've never eaten a pekin, so I can't help you with the taste.

Frozen supermarket Pekins are really good, so homegrown ones would probably be delicious.

You know you're in TSC too often when their staff members are saying, "You're in here as much as we are - you should get a job with us!"

Ohhh...must be the year of the duck! I, too, am looking into ducks. Totally a duck rookie, but look forward to the decrease in my mosquito population! I'm looking for a dual purpose breed as well. Good forager, plenty of eggs and good enough to eat any "extras" for supper. I was looking at Cayugas or Campbells. Hubby says no white ducks and no Muscovy's. Suggestions?

Also, thinking of getting fertile duck hatching eggs to put under my chickens. I always have broodies! Where to get those in the Oneida area?

Have determined the stray Amish rooster is an escape artist, and I'm getting pretty good at chicken herding. Got 2 hens into their shed tonight and Roo. By the time I got the horses turned in, Roo was running in to take his place under the grain buckets. He is becoming a barn pet, but man does he make a mess (at least he roosts in one spot). And he gets into a crowing contest with the other roosters; of course he is in a steel pole barn which echos nicely into our now open bedroom window long before daylight. And this is why we dont want roosters... haha Hubby finally agreed to let me start getting chicks! So, if all goes as planned, I believe I will be the recipient of 4 lovely Blue Orpingtons chicks via chick relay from Happyhens in Albany. It is a start! If anyone has 'spare' chicks from your Easter hatches, I'd still be interested in some Australorps, Wyandottes, Speckled Sussex, Welsummer, Dominique, and Ancona. Pretty much anything that can forage a little, lay decent, is docile and hardy enough to withstand a very excited little girl (and me too!)

OK....so after doing some poking around on the web, maybe we shouldn't rule out Muscovy's. Thoughts?

And, how many ducks should I get? I'm looking for enough of them to manage the skeeters, flies, etc.....

Sorry for all the questions!!

I was reading a post on unusual/innovative brooders on the Meyer Hatchery Facebook page just now. One woman said that she uses sheets of pegboard zip-tied together. That's brilliant - you could make it as big as you needed, pegboard is cheap, and you could take the whole thing down and store it flat when it isn't needed. Gotta love chicken people - we're creative!

YES! I do this! It is sooo inexpensive and I have a few of them..you can cut them different lengths and really customize them...can you tell I love these?! LOL...but my goodness..they do really come in handy.

Java...glad that you got somewhere with the link I sent you!!
