NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a little Frizzle named Frenchy and she gets in and sits on the eggs laid but doesn't lay any herself. So today I moved the eggs to a more hardly used box and put her in and she just got off and left.

She's the only one left of my original hatchery birds but is cute and well known so she gets to stay.

I know we won't be getting goats soon. We have 3 acres. We have all we can learn
raising Silkie Chickens.

We did NOT do well with our first hatch. One egg hatched. All 3 nesting boses
were filled with Broody Silkies and no eggs for us.

We are raising the one chick.

Next hatching season we will separate 2 hens and one rooster and keep
gathering the other eggs. LIVE and LEARN.

Dont worry Aria. You will get babies. I finally saw Little Man mating with Sarah. He did it while they were out freeranging today and I was watching them. At least I know now that he actually knows what to do. Whether or not they are fertile, I will find out on wednesday when I candle the eggs I have in the incubator. Stripe has become somewhat broody and ran back to the coop to sit in a hole she had dug and made broody noises. Her growl is cute. I filled in the hole. Seems like I spend a lot of time filling in the holes! Did you leave the one chick with its mom? I made the mistake of raising a lone chick and it turned out to be a rooster. Mumbles had to find a new home because he didnt know how to be a chicken as I handled him too much. He is happy though.

My glw Elanor has sore feet. I will have to look up the treatment for bumblefoot. There is a sore on the bottom of one of them.. I may just go ahead and soak everyones feet and get a good looksee to make sure no one else has problems. I did inspect some of the crew today and everyone looks good. No signs of parasites, etc.

I am still cleaning out, decluttering and rearranging furniture. I have decided that I would rather be deep cleaning chicken coops than doing this. It would be much easier and faster. Took a break so I could sit outside with the cheeps for a bit. Dh is grilling tonight so he will be the popular one with the girls. They are shameless when it comes to working him for food. Hussies!

Cass, YES we did and we found 2 almost developed dead. We had such
a mix up of eggs. When we took some of the eggs we thought should
have hatched and broke them....some were spoiled.

Just ONE MESS. We did not do it correct. Now we know better.

My chicks all finally hatched. There were 9 but 2 died. 1 LB Cochin roo, 3 Brahmas, 2 GL Cochins, and 1 Silkie. I'm starting another hatch as well but i'm just really excited right now. Also, do you know how to stop poop from getting stuck to their hair. i hav to keep washing the LB Cochin .

pharmchickmom, I just hope the chick we are raising (in the basement) is NOT
a rooster. EEK.

It is tiny...so we have hopes. We have learned a lot and are ready for a
hatch next season. Regards, Aria

Well I candled most of our eggs tonight. 4 turkey eggs weren't fertile and 4 light coronation sussex weren't either. I can't candle the BCM eggs... Or does someone know a special trick to check them???

And one egg has a blood ring what does that mean??

Ok, time for some chicken math from the pros - If I have a 6'x8' snowmobile trailer to rebuild into a portable coop (not necessarily a tractor), do the raised poop board/roost, what is the max chicken number for said coop? Chickens would likely be coop-bound most the winter because we get some nasty wind up here, so the coop would be parked on the east side of the horse barn as a wind block. Thinking single slope roof, 7' down to 5'. Also, what size nest boxes has everyone found works for large fowl? Biggest would be Orps/Sussex, unless hubby wants a Jersey Giant. Smallest would be the Welsummers. I did have a 12-16 hole nest box at my grandpa's barn, but found today that my brother gave it away to the Amish.

Along with the hanging feeder and the chick feeders. But did get the spare stock tank today to go with the brooder light, get the chick feeders/waters tomorrow, then just add chicks!

a blood ring means that the veins didn't develop, so the chick won't develop. Sorry
