NY chicken lover!!!!

I just posted on the silkie thread and someone mentioned they don't really see a big deal because the little one is only a week old and they grow really fast. So maybe he'll catch up this next week LOL

I wouldn't worry too much either. Last year we had one that was much smaller than the rest growing up and still is a little smaller than the rest (not much) but is fine and keeps up with them all.

I thought you could only try to use the wing sexing method for the first several days (1-3) then the feathers grow to the point where you couldn't tell the difference.
Single row all one length -male and alternating short and long-female???

The woman I got them from showed me her two pairs of silkies and they didn't have much leg feathering at all. They're weren't as poofy/feathery as the other nicer silkies I've seen on the actual Silkie Thread. The littlest one only has 4 toes instead of 5 like the older one. So I'm worried about breeding that one and having that trait passed on. I do love them, my main concern was just the size of the littlest one. So you think it's not so much his size but the older one? Like maybe that one was mixed with something? The feathers on the wings are definitely coming in like a silkies. Here's a pic of it's wings. I was going to post this on another thread the other day when I read someone discussing "Wing Feather Sexing" Wanted to see if thats what they went by, if they thought this was a hen instead of a roo. LOL

Oh I have no idea - I didn't even know there was such a thing. I was just going to post that on the thread I came across the other day to see what they're thoughts would be on it. I have no idea what I have and I'm not sure even they are old enough to tell, that I'LL actually be able to sex them myself! LOL I'm sooo new to all this!

Lynzi--yeah, the little one will catch up. Silkies are notoriously hard to sex until they are juveniles. I know. I thought my first silkie mumbles was a pullet for a long time. Imagine my surprise when I heard a strangulated sound coming from my basement and finally realized that mumbles was trying to crow! So much for being sure he was a she. Silkies are very sweet and I have 3 hens and a roo right now. I have 7 new babies in my incubator and hopefully more hatching soon!

Cold wind today. Cheeps not happy about that but they are out and about. Tiny terrorists are growing like weeds. Put some sticks in the box for some chick enhancement experience. They like that.

Tab--glad your back!

Tab: enjoy being able to check out the thread from any spot!

Queenchick 16: I too thought the wing sexing was only the first 24 hours!

On that note I have a Turken pip! Thanks Featherz~~!

I have Light/Coro chicks if anyone is interested...

I have been so busy painting and cleaning my house! It needed so much work! I can't believe how busy you folks are! I was sooooo many pages behind!

Rancher;Chin up so they say! There is a always a bright side too everything!

Enjoy tomorrow it is going to be beautiful!

Aww Lynzi--how cute! I think they will be fine. Other people have silkies in with large fowl and they do just fine. You are raising them together so they are used to each other.

Side note--I have 6 hatched, one hatching and 5 more to go. Hatch started yesterday so how long should I let them continue before moving the babies to the brooder box and calling it quits?

Amy, don't know if you moved your chicks to the brooder yet. I wasn't on yesterday. I remove my newly hatched chicks about every 6 hours. I have a brinsea octogon and don't like chicks being crowded in there . Others wait 3 days for the hatch is complete(about 3 days). The last hatch I think I should have waited longer on the last egg, but oh well it is a learning experience.
So what did you end up with?

Ginny--I moved the chicks to the brooder this morning. I have 8 now and 4 eggs still in the bator. I am going to leave them in till sunday in the hopes that they are late bloomers since hatch day was wednesday and some people leave them in up to 5 days. Out of 24 shipped eggs, 12 made it to incubation and 8 have hatched. I suppose it could have been worse. I have 3 blues and 5 splash bearded silkies. Now I am thinking of running another hatch of my own eggs in 2 weeks since little man has been busy with the girls. I trimmed up everyones bums for better fertility so I am hoping to get a good hatch from my own eggs. You are indeed correct when you say its a learning experience. I waited till this morning to move the babies as I had one zipping last night. Poor babies are now huddled together sleeping off the trauma of being moved!

On another note, the 26 terrorists downstairs are growing like weeds. I will have to put a top on the brooder soon because the sexlinks (who are the biggest chicks) are looking like they are going to fly out any time now! They are a week old and look huge next to the new silkie babys. I put some sticks in there for chick enhancement experience. They all perched on them right quick!

Hoping to get at least 2 more walls framed up this weekend. At the rate the cheeps are growing, we are going to have to move along and get their coop done quick! Have a good day everyone!
