I'm not going to be able to send him to cornell. I did not know to keep the body cold.

I've been thinking about him and I think I may know why he died. the heat that we had was kind of hard on him, so I'm thinking heat stress/heart failure?

all of the male hatchery birds I have had can't seam to stay alive past 2-3 years of age. this is getting to be too much, losing them all!

now I am trying to find birds that are breeder birds not hatchery birds. I did find two breeders for the javas and I'm getting them soon, but nothing on splash cochins.

Captain Morgan, my beta roo, has evidently declared war on the red bottom of the waterer in the run (one of those one-gallon cheapie TSC jobs). When I go out there to change the water, he'll come stand nearby and eye the thing suspiciously. If I hold it out to him (because I think it's funny), he'll run up to it, looking half-terrified, and either hurriedly peck it or jump up and take a swing at it with a foot. He then beats a hasty retreat, occasionally helped along by my yelling "BOO!" at him. He also dislikes my pink plastic water bucket. He has no interest in any other color bucket, just the pink one. Maybe he just prefers cool colors.

The duckehs are going to be booted out to the playroom half of the coop this weekend (blockaded from the chooks for the moment), as, at 6 1/2 weeks old, they're getting huge. They'll get out of the pen and explore the garage while I hook them up with clean feed and water and shavings. Unlike the chickens, though, they're easy to herd, as they move en masse and don't scatter in every direction at once.

I had nine dozen eggs in the fridge, and unloaded them all today (well, Alan did) on my usual suspects. Go, girls!

Evening all. I came home to poop on top of the waterer in the terrorist brooding box. Looks like someone got some air and made it up there. I asked who did it but not one of them would fess up. Guess I have to put the screen on top of the box. I knew they were up to something. Sort of how a mom knows when her kids are up to something. I guess its time I figure out and escapeproof out jail as well so the inmates can have some yard time. They need some space to run and some grass to run on (not to mention something other than me to terrorize). At 3 weeks old I can see that some of the suspect boys are showing roostery behaviour. This group is going to be a handful!

My tiny fluffballs of silk are growing nicely. Introduced them to shavings in their box. Had to show them it wasnt evil and then they started to play with it. 4 will go to their new home next week. Setting eggs again on sunday. Hoping my rooster has been a good boy to the girls and I get some babies.

My diva hens are giving my some really nice eggs lately. I thought at 2 that they might slow down but they havent. Their eggs are now a large to xlarge size and look so perfect on some days. I still think that one or two of them are freeloading but I will leave them be until the others slow down.

Javagirl--sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you get an answer from cornell. Keep us posted.

My little easter hatch chicks are growing up so fast. Some of them are trying to roost! It's funny how different batches of chicks have different personalities - my NYD and Vday chicks loved me from day 1 - the easter hatch chicks think I am a monster who wants to eat them. /sigh.

All of mine are the same way, running away squawking. Trying to handle the big kids when they get closed in at night and food refilled. The orps are getting better, Luna will tolerate it the most. The Aussie is still super skittish in that group. Watching the little kids last night, noticed there are 2 big and 2 little Anconas and the bigger ones have the starting of combs. Hoping that they are just more mature, not 2 roos 2 hens. Still undecided what EE and GLW are going to be.

Does anyone have any experience with the breeder on CL from Corning area that has Cochins, Buff Orps, Partridge Rocks, Australorps, Ameraucanas? They are sexed pullets for $5.25. Has week olds and some are 3-4 weeks old. They deliver to the Corning/Hornell area, but will be through on the way to New Woodstock this weekend. Was thinking of picking up some Rocks, another Aussie and Ameraucana. Not sure if I'll make it to the Auburn swap, so this would work, but don't want to end up with poor quality stock either.

Put the quail eggs into lockdown yesterday and already have a pip! (Some people...er, quail can't wait!) Then, I went out to feed the animals this morning and picked up our broody Silkie to see what was going on. Low and behold, a little fuzzy butt was staring back at me!!!

As I was leaving for work, I hear a ruckus in the Silkie coop. I went to see what was going on (worried that the new baby might be in danger). Our littlest (who has no issue defending herself) is sitting in the Polish's nesting box (actually an old pet carrier) and the Polish were having a fit about it!

We have a pair of Jersey Buff turkeys. Jimmy (the Tom) was strutting his stuff this morning and three wild Toms (and about a dozen hens) were in the field behind the house strutting in challenge to him (not a hundred yards from the house).

What a crazy day!

Why are we praying for rain?!? LOL Thats all I hear out of my husbands mouth when I'm not up there is how crummy the weather is in Syracuse all the time! I just spent all of last week there I think we got maybe 2-3 nice days to be outside doing yard work and what not. I need some nicer weather there otherwise I'll be relocating - AGAIN! LOL
