Thought I should take a second to say hi to everyone. I've been lurking and reading as much as I can and I love it here so far.

I just wanted to say welcome also!

What breed did you decide on? The more breeds I learned of the more I wanted. Morehens diesease is very contagious!

I got cornish x destined for the freezer, that will go into the backyard dog kennel for their short lives, some silkies, Buff Orpingtons, white crested polish and a couple of other types of bantys.

I have a feeling I morehens disease might be something I will easily catch!

DH and I have quite a few different breeds that we've accumulated the past few years. It all started with 6 red sexlinks from TSC, now we have about 90. We have blue laced red wyandotte, golden cuckoo maran, BBS maran, silver ameracauna, delaware (thank you to rancher), project olive eggers (blue barred), buff brahma bantam, and whatever random ones we run across that strike our fancy. This spring we hatched out a couple lemon cuckoo orpingtons just for the fun of having a couple. Feed can get expensive and it takes some time to care for them but they're worth it. Our girls and us just enjoy the whole of having them around! I wish you the same fun and enjoyment!

I'm right there with Tab. Started with 7 now have around 100 chickens counting this years hatches so far. and Welcome

I didn't count this year's hatches. I have too many to count.

Well I finally got my golden cuckoo maran pair separated from the rest of the marans. I put our black copper in with them also because we want to breed in a darker egg color. The roo is considered double barred, so all resulting offspring will be barred. We have a younger pair we hatched on new years from rockin paints that will be nice for our breeding plan because the roo is double barred and has better leg feathering. I can't wait to see what results we get.

Counting chicks.. heck, I don't wanna even count chicks. I think I have like 75 with chicks, but 30ish will be going out soon. I like to keep 40ish adult birds. =)

Here ya go Java! A little favorelle! I see three possible java chicks (black and white) so far and now I have two favorelles. Could be more hidden in mamas feathers. I don't know if the EE's will hatch, but you did mention the fertility was poor in those. Plus I have a few mutt chicks to stick under em.

Happiness! The school chicks are starting to hatch! Three of six so far. Hopefully all girls, although I have a friend who will take a couple boys if needed. Mereks vaccine came today so will vaccinate tomorrow or friday. Anybody need 994 doses of Mereks vaccine?

We just had a Poultry event and the DVM from Cornell said that Marek's vaccine had to be stored in liquid nitrogen. Do you have something new?

I am curious as to how many people are shifting their poultry plan this year, and how are you doing it.

Last year I wanted to get some Orps, RIR, Amers(EE), and Jersey Giants. I was able to do that, and also added some BLRW.

After having them all for a year, I am shifting focus a little. I am going to order Giant eggs from numerous sources over the next few years (Incubator addition makes this possible) I have added Marans (At my wife's request), and I will probably eliminate the BLRW and RIR. I got rid of the EE's and got Amers, and moving forward will try to focus on the Giants, Amers, and Wheaten Marans. If I could convince my wife that I needed a second coop, then I could keep all, but it makes it hard trying to separate for hatching.

I have a horrible case of morehens disease and my wife helps keep it in check.

I change most plans every year. In the fall I am content with the breeds I have then in the spring I participate in eggs swaps on BYC and get really cool stuff and need to switch it up so I can keep the "favorites" Life is ever changing.

2 of my eggs under my broody hatched, got out of the nest box and died. No obvious injury, so the hens left them alone, they just got toooo cold and couldn't get back in the nest. I am SOOOO ****** I didn't take the nest box down yesterday....I thought about it, but they weren't supposed to hatch until SATURDAY, so I figured I could do it tonight. WRONG!!!

Next time, if they go broody in a hung nest box I am going to move it to the floor on lock down day, and not trust them to take 21 days to hatch. Sheesh. Can't they read a calendar?

I am sorry. I have more D'Uccles for you soon - due to hatch on Thursday. Then there will be more due on the 13th.

Has anyone heard of the breed Long Crower..you listen for the one who crows the longest and then breed with him..They can crow forever...ok the opposite of the above post..

I just had to give 3 of my late hatchers a bath because they were sticky. They are now back in the bator to dry and poof up. Hope everyone has a good day.

Poultry school went great, about 70 people came. We had an avian vet from Cornell, she was great. Also, presenters on bathing and showing birds, I did a little bit on housing, a great presentation on embryology and hatching. Please come next year!
