NY chicken lover!!!!

Actually, I was very lucky. Two years ago when I did three hatchery orders they were ALL pullets. Of course then I just HAD to start hatching and well.. I seem to have a knack for hatching out boys. :p
My hatchery girls were all pullets. My four straight-run SS though? Three boys, one girl. Watch - the majority of these chickies I'm hatching will be dudes as well.

The ducks appear to be either three drakes and five hens or four and four. Three are definitely drakes, and are starting to develop the green feathers on their heads. The fourth is sort of an "it's Pat" of ducks, although I'm leaning towards drake.

Random poultry photo of the day - this is my roo Captain Morgan discovering that ducks don't listen to roosters. The roos had rounded up the girls and put them back into the run. Meanwhile, the ducks continued to eat grass perfectly contentedly. So, the Captain came hustling back out into the yard and began scolding them. They completely ignored him, and went about their duck business. He seemed positively befuddled, like "why aren't these stupid-looking hens obeying me?"

I hope everyone had a good mothers day. I spent mine working on the big coop with my dd and dh. Did lots of staining and it is all enclosed except for the windows and door. Looks good. Have to take more pics for the album I am creating. Might get these rir babies in by the weekend. Little terrorists were outside all day yesterday and today and they are always cruzing the perimeters of their jail yard looking for escape routes. Had to chase a few down and throw them back into the "yard". I have never seen any chicken grow as fast as these do and man can they eat!!! If they lay eggs like they eat, then we will be all right.

I have one silkie baby hatched as of right now. I am so hoping the other 8 hatch. Nothing yet with them.. Humidity keeps dropping on me. I am holding out hope that they all hatch. My broody silkie is close to hatching her 2 eggs. She is now in her "I will destroy everything and everyone who comes near" frame of mind. Tried to take out my hand today and all I did was pet her a little! For such a little thing, she is fiesty!!! Hoping she hatches out her 2 as well. She is very determined to be a mommy. I hope her sisters and Little Man mind their ps and qs cause she is gonna take them out if they dont.

The last 2 days have been just beautiful and all the chicks and chickens have been enjoying lots of outdoor time. My hens were in their glory freeranging all day long and showed their appreciation with some beautiful eggs. As I said, the terrorists, when not squabbling (mostly the boys) spent their day eating, dusting and looking for escape routes. The tots (aka the silkie babies) were perfectly happy in the wire dog cage doing chicken things. My silkies enjoyed freerange time but I had to be vigilante as there were 3 peregine falcons cruzing around looking for freebies. With 3 of us outside moving around, I think it was enough of a deterent to keep them at bay.

My mothers day coop is done but my daughter and her boyfriend left on their cruise today so I will get it when they get back. I will post pics when it arrives!

Pharmchickmom: Congratulations on your coop. Hope you end up with lota silkies.

My chooks were not liking the heat the last couple of days, but they really liked the absence of rain. Had to trot out exta water today and everyone made dust bath holes. Looks like a morter field in the upper part of the pen.

School chicks are growing well and chick order from TX should be here in a little less then two weeks. Jahourns are on their way soon.

Happy Mother's day everyone!

I had a good mother's day yesterday. It was bueatiful out. I'm glad it didn't rain. We went to Bowman Lake state park for a picnic. It was nice there, quiet and little traffic. We are going to go back and camp later this summer.

We started treating our birds with the generic Ivermectin pour on. It does have egg withdrawal for 10 days, but I felt it was worth it due to price difference. It was $15 where as the eprinex was $40. We're staggering treatment of the pens over a few days so we'll still be able to collect some more eating eggs from the ones not treated first. We're going to try hatching some of the ones that have to be withdrawn and see how that goes.

I believe that the Richardsons in vernon center sell feed in bulk. When I scan my card it comes up TP sales and service. We buy ours in 50lb bags though. Their number is 315-829-8000

I get my layer and scratch at Richardsons and I'm happy with it. They offer a soy free layer that we use. I'm going there today and thinking about trying their chick starter. Their pine shavings are a great price too.

So how did they turn out? When I made them I didn't use a cookie cutter. I just patted the dough out into a rectangle and cut that into squares with a knife. I also cut the salt in half. I think they would be great for strawberry shortcakes. I love cooking and trying out new recipes. Especially when trying to do new things with things from my garden.

they came out really good, a little salty so I think I will cut the salt in half also but def a quick recipe that I will use again, probably a lot. we made egg/sausage breakfast sandwhiches with them for breakfast,,,mmmmmm.

I made them again yesterday. This time I used yogurt that was packaged as plain. The first time I made them I had scooped the yogurt from a fruit on bottom container, hence the hint of sweet flavor in that first batch. It makes sense different yogurt different flavor.
