NY chicken lover!!!!

Afternoon all. This heat is killing me but my cheeps are doing well. Water, food, shade and frozen watermelon when I get home seems to keep everyone happy. I, on the other hand, cant wait for this heat to break. This chick does not do well and frozen stuff doesnt help much.

Finally got an egg today from the silkie pen so I am guessing that at least one hen is done being a momma and is back to normal. Almost time to send the kiddies off to their new home anyways, along with the little pullet. Candling tonight to see how many are still going in the bator. I am hoping for all but will settle for most.

Ginny--its never wrong to be optomistic! The terrorists are working on ripping off the cardboard covering the nest boxes in their coop so I am presuming that they are either nosy or wanting to lay. Probably the former!

I told my dd the same thing about the silkies when she complained about me selling off the other ones. I said that unless she wishes to share her room with them, I cannot keep them all. I would love to, but no,,,aint happening. I did tell her to be glad that she and her sisters werent chickens. She was not amused!

Hi Java! Want a chantecler rooster? he's pretttty! :p

I can't go to any swaps I can't pronounce.. what can I say, I'm from california. We don't spell stuff funny like they do here. =)

My chickens all made it through the heat! YAY. Noticed a weird injury on one of my NN pullets that I'll have to doctor up tonight. Their little necks are so sensitive and I think she might have banged up against a fence. Started fencing in a larger area of yard so they might be able to go out again this weekend! (which is great because the runs smell and that NEVER happens!).

sure why not!! also if anyone does not want your free chicks, I will take them!! just not sure when I can get the bird/birds. I am trying to go on the 30th.

I lost a Sumantra yesterday. Predator. I suspect my cat, but who really knows what leaves a pile of feathers and no body. My own fault too, which seems to be the way around here. Tuesday night was a zoo, with sister in law at hospital and helping my brother with 8 kids and I forgot to go out after dark and put them into their enclosure....so they were out overnight. Poor thing. Of course it was one of the hens. Never the roosters that die or get eatten (at least by predators, I eat them all the time), always the hens. I have more, but I really wanted to populate my trees with chickens and that isn't going to happen if the hens all dissappear.

So far I have umm.. 8 fluffed + 1 fluffed that went under my broody, then there's 7 still in the bator in various stages of hatching.. Here's the eight early birds!

Some of em are a bit sticky, which never happens in my brinsea - I think it must be the high humidity in the house. Lost one that pipped and got stuck. Was too late to intervene poor thing.

Awww =(.. My cats don't bother the chickens, but I know when they catch a songbird they just leave it there after playing with it to death. They don't eat it. All of my 'pile of feathers' kills were hawk or fox. But with a chicken that small who knows. =(

I agree, it's always the hens.. and the ones you like too. My 'heart attack chicken' (so named because she's obese and always waddling around looking she's going to keel over) SURVIVED the fox attack so he went and got one of my favorite NN instead. GRR.

Tell me about it. Always the "good" ones get "gone". Tried have Crele Penedesencas - 3 hens 1 Roo. Yup, the Rooster died.

I've got some free Australorp cockerals if anyone wants to pick them up. Nothing gets a bird when you have too many.
