NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi all,

Another hen has gone broody. Another Birchen Marans. I will give her some Del eggs I suppose. I'd really like to be exact with the orp eggs and give her a couple of the BBS eggs. But I don't know which egg is hers and I only have the one. Why I should let them hatch is beyond me. I just gave away two chicks. Well he paid a dollar each but after I gave him a dozen eggs they were free. He and His are just starting with chickens and their hens aren't laying yet.

For the record I too have a wounded hen. Just a pullet really. I don't know how it happened but she's been flopping over and having a hard time walking. I let out all the others and then leave her to rest unmolested for the day. I'm sure this heat doesn't help her any.

Stony - we all know it works both ways some folks just won't admit it or have selective hearing.

I admit to ignoring DW now and then.

Pharm - good luck with the holes. I could use a few here. I buy the green metal stakes since I can't dig two feet down. Lord have mercy I have no idea what is under the top layer but it is hard as you know what. I tried to pound in some today and they just would not go in. I've got to scrape the top layer off and see just what is under there. If it's shale I'm calling the gas company and selling this joint and buying a place with more land and farther from the city.

Perhaps in Alabama.

Now I admit to thinking of you since I just found out the father of some kids my DD babysits for is in the ICU with bacteria menangitis. She's been taking my two year old GD with her too. What can you tell me about this.?

Very nice but they're not as nice a Dels.

I have said if I got RIR's they would have to be rosecombs though.
these are from a closed chicken farm. Same flock bred for 50 or 60 years. They are big girls that lay eggs the size of my Pekin duck eggs. True jumbo's. mostly 3 to 4 years old and still laying well.

Truth be told they are hams for the camera. They see it and walk up to and on my feet. Stand there looking at me.

Update on coon attacked hen:

Antibiotic in the water, but she isn't drinking much. She doesn' t have any meat on her to inject anything into. She crop area is very swollen and smushy. She has been up and walking a bit. She definately perks up when Ray talks to her. (Should I tell her that he is the one who ignored my yelling and that's why she got so hurt?) I'm hoping she will make it, but she will be disfigured if she does. I feel so sorry for her, but I have to give her a chance before I cull. I go on vacation in 2 weeks...she has til then. If she is improving, she stays, if not, I can't let her suffer while I am on the beach enjoying life.

Chickens that didn't get put in coop last night came running for all corners of the property this morning. Was funny to watch, but I don't open the coop in AM, so they had to wait til I got home from work for "real" food. Hope they bugs haven't all died off as the lawn did.

Oh, that poor guy. Bacterial meningitis is not good. Does your daughter sit for them at their house? If so, I recommend having her call her physician and your granddaughter's pediatrician. Their docs may want to give them a prophylactic course of antibiotics, just to be on the safe side.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for her. My guess is she'll either perk up long before two weeks or she won't make it. =( I had a half blind rooster a while back - he did fine. But sometimes the shock is just too much for them. If it's just simple external wounds, those they seem to heal quite well. Poor gal. =(

Any signs of the coon?

Eglu has been put back into use...as a rooster pen. Past two days the flock hasn't been outside like usual, just hanging in the coop. All because the EE duo are guarding the coop. Anyone that ventures out gets chased. Had the big Orp roo pinned between the wire and tree that it is wrapped around. The duo spends the all day walking around outside, then go in to chase the NH girl out for a little fun. And it is not just one breeding, it is multiple times. Poor girl just can't get away. Of course the third EE roo has stepped up to the breeding plate this morning, but at least the flock is going outside again. I know the separation won't 'fix' the EE duo's problems, but it relieves the flock of two pests. And makes me feel better that they aren't trapped in the coop all day.

I agree Hen. It is important (Rancher), especially for your grandaughter, that her doctor is aware of the situation so he/she can decide if they should have a preventative course of antibiotics. Meningitis in any form is nothing to fool around with.

Lapeerian--if they were my roos, I would have had a bar b que already! Good luck with them. I hope you have sentenced them to long prison terms!

Cass--sounds like your little hen has a thing for your dh. Maybe he can get her to drink. I hope she makes it.

Stoney--Those are some beautiful birds! You got some amazing bloodlines when you got them. I just finished reading an interesting book about the breed. The Rhode Island Red--History, Breeding, Management, Exhibition and Judging by George Scott. It is an old book, published back in the 40"s maybe? by the Secretary/club judge of the British Rhode Island Red Club. Its free and very interesting. My reds are from a hatchery so they wont look as nice as yours but I do have at least one roo and several hens that fit the breed standard pretty closely as far as shape, structure and coloring so who knows? As long as they lay eggs, its all good!

Stay cool everyone!
