NY chicken lover!!!!

So Country Max is having a sale on wood shavings and I went to get some. Sale time is a good time to clean I suppose. Anyhow first day of sale and they were out of the Nobles 4.20 a bale. BUT they had the more expensive Basic for 4.70.

I am not liked at this particular CM for reasons I won't go into, but I got two of the Basic since I needed to clean. Then when I got home I called another not so nearby store about the Noble. I was told the truck broke down and it didn't come in but they could give me the 4.70 for the 4.20. I said I just left the other store and she didn't say that and she charged me the higher price. Is that a store policy or a corporate policy to sell the Basic for the same price as the Noble? He says, let me check with the manager. Well it was a corporate policy and if I came there they would give me the lower price. He also stated that the other store has a bad rep.

Anyhow today is the last day of the sale if you need some. I usually stock up and keep it in the enclosed run for later.

99* tomorrow? I'm not so sure since the paper said it might not happen. But air conditioners are selling like hot cakes here. Guess that's one good reason to raise the temp a few degrees. I can never understand why all three TV stations are a few degrees different from each other.

Have a nice day folks. I don't expect to get much done tomorrow if it gets that hot. At least not outside.
I go to the local saw mill on the rare occation I need to buy shavings. I run my 20 inch planer a lot so I rarely need to buy them. But when I do I get my truck loaded with 3 scoops from a medium sized skid steer. He packs it in and fills my 5 foot wide by 8 foot long bed for $25.

Is anyone in my area trying to introduce the silkie gene for something like sizzles? I have a couple of blue silkie roos that need a home, but they're poor quality for the breed standard. We also have some cockerals that should be good to breed to a laying flock. They're Brahma/RIR with Golden Comet(3) or Brahma/?(1)

You could try Sonew123 she had some. The ones she had carried the Tolbunt gene so they were a little expensive for a yard chicken, but it doesn't hurt to ask her. She has some beautiful birds.
Thanks, I will take a look.

My wannabe broody BLRW (the Velma to my avatar girl Daphne) has a new friend this evening. She has one of Lenore's poor, kicked-to-the-curb four-week-old chicks accompanying her in the nest box she has taken to sleeping in, and seems extremely pleased by it. I took the peep out and set it on the ledge outside the nest box just to see what would happen. Velma started clucking to it, and it hopped right back into the box and snuggled down next to her. She fluffed herself up and settled down contentedly to sleep. Good - maybe having a chick to mother, even an older one, will cause her to break sooner rather than later.

Tomorrow is the first weekday I've had off since the Fourth, as I worked a lot of OT over the past couple of weeks. I'm glad of it since it's supposed to be so ridiculously hot. I'll go from my air-conditioned bedroom to the coop to feed and water everyone, and then to the pool where I will lurk like an alligator all day long.

Morning all. You know its going to be hot when its 70 at 530 am. Makes me glad I already filled all the feeders and gave everyone electrolytes in their waterers. Now if only I didnt have to go out later!

Hen--enjoy your day off. Lord knows we work hard enough for it! Just be careful you dont boil in the pool (or roast!).

The red sexlinks found an escape hole yesterday and were out for who knows how long. They are very smart girls. The one followed me all around the yard to all the coops as I was feeding and watering everyone. She loves attention and will often sit on my lap and talk to me. Sbe made the mistake of running into the big girls run and Nellie had to go and chase her around until she ran out. I think my laying hens have finally given up on the idea that the newbies will leave and are tolerating them as long as they remember who owns the realestate. At least Trouble has stopped trying to kill my silkies as she is busy keeping track of the others when they are out. One of the sexlinks submitted to one of the roos yesterday so they must be close to laying.

Stay cool everyone.

I just want to say I would take 70* days over this 90* stuff any day.

Well today was the first day of official daycare for my girls. I've been scrambling for a sitter recently because 2 of my family members have had circumstances change so they couldn't watch them anymore. It went well, they wanted to stay and play not come home. It's part time the rest of the summer, but in the fall it will be everyday. That means I'll be paying out a full weeks worth of pay each month. I've never had to pay for day care so this is going to be quite a change. I'm praying for my youngest to potty train then I can send her to pre-k which is cheaper then day care.

I've had broodies all summer so far. And evertime I turn around there is another one doing it. Jeez girls this is not the cool thing to do so quit the madness!

98°F...this is crazy! Glad my son is home to take care of the animals. Best of luck with the potty training, Tab. Got a nice pair of frizzles (real frizzles finally!) at auction over the weekend. My son lost some doves last week, so we ramped up our diligence with the traps and have caught five raccoons in the last week! (...and one opposum).
