NY chicken lover!!!!

Guinea keets are like chicks on crack.. Then when they get older.. whoo boy.. 'really loud talkers' doesn't cover it. I loved my guineas - my husband wanted them for tick control so I kept 17 until they were around 4 months old and I just could not take it anymore. They got along fine with the chickens, roosted with them etc.. but the noise!! They 'buckwheated' NON STOP from dawn to dusk..
Chicks on crack is right! I put 18 chicks together...3 silkies, 6 EE's, 3 cochins, and 6 Guinea keets. At about 2 weeks I had to take the guineas out because they were making the other chicks BANANAS. They ALL started with flighty behavior. Once I removed them, the chicks calmed down and became normal. The keets were still nutty. Unfortunately, the first night the guineas were outside in the coop, an animal got in and killed them all. Maybe I will try again next year....we'll see, I really didn't enjoy them that much. Hopefully, I will change my mind by next year.

Yay! Many of my pullets are finally laying! Out of 19 pullets, I'm getting 11 or 12 eggs per day right now. So I think a few are still not quite of laying age. I'm trying to sit out there and figure out who is and who isn't. Dh laughs at me because I'll sit out there for hours watching the girls come and go.
I discovered that one pullet makes the announcement "Baaaalllllk" whenever another pullet lays an egg. It's hysterical. Then she'll walk out of the coop with the other one like, "Hey, I supervised!".

Well, we had our first experience with the livestock auction (Fingerlakes, in Canandaigua yesterday). We brought three ducks down to sell. Still don't know how much they brought. We left so I wouldn't be heartbroken to see them handled.
I know that's how livestock is normally handled, but my daughter and I were crushed. Our poor ducks screamed and carried on. I thought my poor daughter was going to cry.
I thought about bidding on some australorp hens but I can't tell if a hen is old or young (how DO you tell???) so I passed.
But we DID get two new babies. We came home with two 6 month old little goats. They are twins and were bottle fed. OMG are they cute! We have been having a blast with them. All new experience. My daughter was with us, but the look on my son's face when he saw them at home was priceless.
Did anyone else make it to the auction?

I think as far as handling goes they're pretty good, I've seen much worse. I do think they need to have people put stuff in proper boxes, but that's an issue across the board at auctions, people don't know or don't care how stuff is packaged.

I bought three Black Orp hens that they had in a long cage, so the kids put them all in ONE small box. Thank goodness it was not hot or they would have been dead, as it was the largest one looked rough for a bit. They also lost one of my call ducklings, but that was not their fault, the people who sent them probably didn't know they could jump and get out the box handle holes!

That's all we bought, just brought a couple extra Ameraucana Roosters and a few bunnies I didn't need, bid on a few silkie chicks since they seem to be cursed here, one of the youngest ones does not look good and one of my runty Silkie pullets was dead when I got home from the auction. Then something got my Ameraucana Rooster from the A frame coop, upon inspection I found a hole, it must have climbed up the wall to get in I guess?

All in all I thought the prices were decent, I wanted some Guineas but they went really high, I almost bid on the Sebastaphol goslings, those went stupid cheap, but I left my moola at home so I would not overspend, lol

I think the next auction is in Bath next month, I have never been to the Kings auction.

I did notice that chicks went for next to nothing, they had lots of Delaware chicks that went for like .60 each!

I was happy to get those Orps, I have not been able to find anything and the eggs I bought last month did not hatch. Price was good and they look really nice too, My Chocolate Roo will be sooo happy once the girls clear quarintine. :p

Last night I got rid of 6 Dels, 1 EE and 1 BLRW. This morning when I went to let everyone out I couldnt believe all the room! Told DH that look more room for silkies now!
I have 9 buff silkie chicks for $5.00 per chick that my hen hatched out on fri if you are looking for some.

Depending on the breed of chicken, you may never get 19 eggs in one day, cuz not all chickens lay every day. They may all be laying right now, but some are laying every other day, taking turns adding to your egg count.

I have a rooster that announces the arrival of an egg, if he is in the coop when it is laid. I'm like "just like a man, take the credit when all he did was stand there during the process" LOL

That's what I'm trying to figure out. I think 2 pullets have not laid yet. They are a little younger than the others and I have only seen them check out the lay boxes and leave again. Getting ready to, though! So far, I think my best layers for size of egg and frequency have been the Tetra Tints. Nice large eggs!
I'm like a kid every morning out there! lol

I can't do chicks now, seeing as I already have 18 3 week olds in my garage waiting for their coop! :)
Sounds like you made out okay. I'm sure you saw me. Dh and I were right down in front next to the door that the dogs kept coming in. My daughter was there a while, too.
I wonder if things just get too dehydrated? :(
