NY chicken lover!!!!

Wow! What gorgeous birds! Absolutely stunning! I'm not too particular on color, although I really like the color of Bruce :D I just wanted a Standard Cochin Roo :) they are so beautifu. My favorite rooster Harry died this spring and he was a Cochin/polish mix and he was just the nicest rooster? How long before your new hens start laying?

Well if don't find a new roo by January let me no as I should be hatching by then. I will also have hens 2 go with him.

Is there anyone on this thread that is not too far from the Syracuse area any may have some older silkies for sale? I'm looking for at least one other hen and maybe a roo as well. I've learned recently that it may be best to seperate my "lone Silkie" from my orpingtons seeing as how I have a roo and he could do some damage if he tries to mate with her. However I do not want to seperate her from her flock and keep her by herself. I cannot rehome her because she is my 3 yr old DD's hen and she would be devastated! She has a such a great bond with this hen that she is the only one that can actually "catch" her and hold her. She doesn't run from my daughter in other words, she runs from all of us, making it hard for us to ever get our hands on her if need be. So I'd like to hold onto her and keep her seperate from the other larger breeds. This of course would also mean having to get another coop which I'm thinking of trying to build one myself.

So if anyone has one or two silkies that are her age and would be ready to be kept outdoors or can give me any info I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!!

no, and I really want to go too but its too far for me unless I can finish the quilt for Sachasmom, but I have no clue when the NY state fair ends!!

Has anyone been to the NY State Fair yet? I think we're going this Friday during the day. Can you actually buy chickens from people there or do you just basically grab their info because the ones they've brought are for show only? I've never been to this fair.

We are going Friday - Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean concert

With millions of other people. It is going to be a mad house, sea of people. I think when we went 4 years ago was the first time and only time I had been through the poultry barn. Definitly dragging hubby through this year, now I know a little more of what I'm looking at. I went to the fair several years while showing my beloved old Bingo in the 4-H horse show. The last day of the fair is on Monday, Labor Day. The girl in Morrisville that I got my second batch of chicks from currently has bantam cochin and silkie chicks. Probably only pet quality, don't know if she would have any older birds for sale, she might.

Why do you have to separate her? Is your roo trying to mount her? If he is leaving her alone, let her stay with the flock. Actually, My LF Roos try to mate with my D'uccles (Smaller than a silkie) and can't do it, so they just stopped trying.

I agree, if he doesnt bother her, no need to remove her. If he is getting after her though, especially if she is a small girl, take her out. My EE roo made a real mess of one of my silkie hens....she was his favorite. He pulled all her crest feathers out and chunks of neck and back feathers. I only have silkies now, aside from a mille fluer d'uccle. My current roo, complete gentleman and no massive feather loss on any of the girls.

I just fear that if he tries to mount her, he could end up injuring her. Right now he hasn't tried to mate with any of the three hens, but I fgured if I could prevent it from happening then maybe I should? He's just so big compared to her.
