Henni - is that the chick you got at the meet? They weren't only two or three days old. I brought what I thought were the ones who were born the closest, but since they were all only a day or two apart it was hard to tell. Not to worry though there are or will be more where they came from. I've got four hens sitting on eggs.

It was. I think it was just too stressed out by life. It was fine when I got it home, but became listless later that night, and I lost it the next day. The other two are doing beautifully, though. There are a few flies in the garage that occasionally go near the brooder. The two of them stalk the flies intently, which is hilarious. Gotta love the little puffballs!

Lenore the Jersey Not-So-Giant is acting broody again. I may give her four or five of the eggs Mrs. B is currently setting, as she proved to be a superb mother (well, until she abandoned her kids at five weeks of age).

The two newbies have hooked up with my other pullets, and they're all hanging around together with no drama. So, this evening I had the Del, the EE, one of the big Brahma crosses, and the Buff Orp cross all jammed into one nest box together. It was packed!

I saw a pic of the frizzled polish on the BYC homepage and fell in love, can't find one though. Maybe next year I'll find ONE. Just one hen would do fine and add a little CHA CHA to the yard. I am currently focusing on breeding some nice BBS chicks for my stock next year. The hens are FINALLY laying.

All but my Avatar, Isabel, the beauty queen.
Yeah! So glad your girls are finally laying! I hope Sam is behaving himself. Has your daughter taken to him yet? Still working on getting some girls for his brothers. I posted pics of them a few days ago on here for you. Geri might have some for me.

Off to a long day. The boys are crowing early today.

Bleh, just tried grafting (well, last night) shipped chicks under two mamas, one of which has been a good mama in the past. Chicks appear to be too willful and won't accept a mama (keep jumping out and running around), which makes mama(s) not graft on to chicks. Had to remove them all (shipped chicks are expensive! =)) and put them up with the ecoglow. Never had a problem grafting just out of the egg chicks, but maybe the long shipping ordeal for these made them punchy.

Very true, I just let my 2 Buff Orp pullets go to a new home because they were getting very large and I had VERY nice silkie chicks and I was worried about possible head injuries. Silkies are notorious for suffering head injuries, especially with larger birds. My orps were gentle girls, but I didn't want to take that chance with the little ones, especially since I am striving for Show Quality birds.
This is exactly what I was told and I just don't want to risk the chance and lose my last silkie. So for now I think keeping this one and the two additional I'll keep them on opposite sides of the yard. The silkies will have a run and I'll just let them out from time to time either when they're being monitored or when the other ones are still in their coop.

Thanks for all the advice about my "peeping Tom" rooster. I didn't really want to clip him as I like him to some defense mechanism. I like the advice about the deer netting over the top of the fenced in area. Sounds do-able. So pharmchickrnmom wins the prize!!! What do you all use in your fenced in chicken yards for litter. wood shavings? When it rains, the little buggers get so dirty even with the shavings. Maybe I'm not using enough of them. Also, how far into fall do the Schaghticoke auctions continue to meet?

As for litter in the chicken yard, I use weeds. Sounds strange, and it a wet summer it might not be as good, but this year it has been wonderful. My wife and I have a large garden, so every day I take a muck tub or up to a full wheelbarrow of weeds and put it in the run. It gives them something to scratch through, and it seems to keep the run fresh. The eggs yolks have gotten a lot darker.

I use straw, grass clippings & weeds. There is some shavings in their as well. The shavings tend to hold moisture more so I only use those in the nesting boxes. I usually rake thru thru the litter every day & bring the damp stuff up to the surface. At first there was an odor but after a few times of raking everything over on a regular basis the smell has disappeared.

I also tend to dump a few buckets of dirt in there once a week for them to use as a dust bath. Every see a hen pile up? Its funny to watch

I bag up all the pine needles when they drop in the fall and use them all winter for my silkies and hens. Now that we have a big coop and run for the terrorists (aka rir mix) I am dumping in loads of pine chips that my neighbor chipped for me when we cut down all the pine trees to make room for the coop and open up the yard more. The logs we sawed into wood for the coop, the smaller logs (not really sawable) were used as posts for the run and all the refuse was put through the chipper last year. It has been sitting for a year and now is very nice to dump in their run. They love picking through it for all the bugs and are spreading it out nicely and working it into the dirt. Since the run faces south, it dries out pretty good during the day. I have a big pile so it will last a while. I also rake up the lawn after mowing and throw all the grass in there as well. I love using chickens to do the work for me! Almost forgot, I also bag up leaves as well. I like using all the free stuff that falls on the ground in the woods around me.

Well, they are certainly longer than my own. I will not need to put mascara on the top lashes, but one could if one wanted. Took about an hour. You have to keep your eyes closed for the process. When I opened my eyes they burned like crazy and watered. They were a bit red. I purposely went shopping at Target after. No one STARED at me so even though I felt really weird, I think I did not LOOK freakish!! Anyway, I think that the glue is really toxic and doing it once in my life it is ok, but doing it regularly would be a bad idea. As far as upkeep, I have to try not to get them wet for 24 hours, and do not use a eyelash curler. But after that I should have them for 4-6 weeks!! I will keep you posted as to " how a farmer does with false eyelashes" !!!!
