NY chicken lover!!!!

Ok folks, need some help here. Just went outside to here what all the squawking was about, right next to our rabbit hutch on the ground was a an egg. But not an egg inside a shell, it was actually a egg with a broken "skin". What is up with that?!? Could it have been my son's hen since she is the only one we've been getting eggs from? She already layed an egg for us today around 11am, the same time she does everyday. Or could it have been from one of the other hens. She was the only one around when we found it. All the others were under the porch.

You know what else I do, in addition to the vinegar....I put them in the fridge over night before trying to take the shells off. I wonder if that make a difference? My shells are really hard too, and I roll them on the counter (well, whack them first, then roll) and the shells come right off.

One time I dropped a fresh egg on the way to the fridge and it hit the floor from waist high...it didn't break...I wasn't shocked, cuz before the glass bowl, I considered using a tack hammer on them

And we expect little chicks to bust out of there?

Hi New Yorkers Oh I am so happy to see you all, I feel like no one around me has chickens, when I started to mention it to the people around me (my own friends etc) everyone looked at me like it was insane. I have never had chickens, but am interested in keeping a backyard flock for my families own personal needs. I have 8 baby girls headed my way in October and am so excited! I wish I could have met some people in my area to actually have some hands on experience and local friends to talk birds to about the local issues we face together. I right now am having a hard time finding local places for organic food...I have to either get it shipped in or drive up towards Albany or West to Pennsylvania. I am in Rockland County.

It's got to be a first egg from a newbie momma. I found one with just a little thicker skin a few weeks ago under a roost. Not to worry!

Egg weirdness! I occasionally get the water-balloon versions. My dogs love them.

Speaking of that, I have one of the weirdest Leghorn eggs yet in my fridge. It's about half again normal size, is shaped like a mutant teardrop with a flattened side, and has a nifty thickened shell ring around the pointed end. I'll have to put up a photo of it, because it's bizarre. It's probably Trucker Chick - she comes up with strange things on occasion. Both Leghorns took a hiatus of about eight days, lost a few feathers, and then promptly started up laying again. I guess that was Leghorn "molt."

There was a teenage girl in the poultry building at the fair who found a loose feather and was thrilled to death. I wanted to say "come to my house - you can have all the feathers you want if you clean out my coop."

Oh, and welcome aboard to our new members! Soon we'll have enough NYS (and surrounding areas) chicken keepers to take over the world! MUAHAHAHA - wait - did I type that out loud?

Had 24 Muscovies and the last 4 silkie roosters processed today. Three nice young people with a mobile processing set-up drove into my yard and did the job. They came out nice and are resting in the fridge for a few days (the chickens, not the people). Kinda sad and one of the silkie hens is crying for her favorite roo. They were downing 2-4 bags of feed a week and had to be thinned down.

Finally the original plan comes together and the chicken flocks are being merged into one coop, ducks in the other.

Nice to see so many new folks on this thread and sorry I missed the get together. Sounds like you all had a good time. I lost my cute little mare to a broken leg about a month ago and was out horse shopping. Found a nice middle aged standardbred gelding that is getting too old to pull an Amish buggy. "Sparky" is a real sweetheart and behaved like a gentleman the third time someone was on his back (me).

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your horse but glad to hear that you found another nice horse.

Sometimes i get these when birds are first coming into lay, whether it is a first time or after a molt, or winter. I do not worry unless it happens often.

Hey, glad to see you back. Congrats on finding a new horse! How are the buff orp ladies doing?

Buff Orps are doing great. Gina just loves them. It took a while, but they are part of the flock now - no more initiation picking. They are such pretty girls and when I look over next door the little flock is like a picture postcard, red, white, black, and gold. My extra golden cuckoo marans rooster moves in with them tomorrow. He is too pretty to eat and behaves well. If I can remember tomorrow I'll take pictures. So much to do with horse stuff and everything in the garden ripening at once. Too bad you can't build a chicken coop with summer squash like a log cabin.
