Morning all! My new silkie girls are settling in nicely and the boys are learning(slowly) to be nice to them. They are beautiful specimens of their breed so I am hoping to have some real nice quality chicks this spring. Galadriel has proved to be a more assertive girl and she got into an argument with Frodo yesterday. Nothing major and I was right there in case any separation had to be made. I am happy that now I have two good breeding pens of quality silkies after a year and a half of acquiring good stock.
King Olof decided to take a shot at me yesterday after I got home. All I was doing was walking to the terrorist coop to get the feeder and all of a sudden I had a rooster flogging me. He didnt count on the speed with which my foot connected with his body though. He was between me and the run fencing and he bounced pretty good when I sent him flying. I may have some years and fat on me, but I can move pretty quick when I need to. Needless to say, after the boot and me chasing him all around the backyard and the coop with a rake in my hand, he is now carefully keeping some distance between us. His brother, Hane, just watched. He is more respectful and will carefully take food from me and feed the girls. Olof still has some manners to work on. Sorry to say this Rancher, but I am getting about 2 dozen eggs a day, mostly from my rir pen. They are laying machines and I usually have a dozen by 8 am.
A gorgeous day today. Going to make some hot pepper jam as I bartered eggs for some organically grown red hot peppers. They are just beautiful. Going to put some in the dehydrator as well for winter use. Acorns are dropping well so I will be out gathering them and maybe crushing some to see if the chickens eat them. Dang grey squirrels are invading my yard. Time for target practice again (and dinner!).
Enjoy the day everyone!
