NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi everyone,
I'm in the Hyde Park/Poughkeepsie area. We have a flock of egg layers, purchased as chicks this past spring, who are just starting to lay. We also have some silkies and are in the process of locating foundation stock to develop a small, show quality breeding program.

Rancher, two of your grandchicks have hatched out under Mrs. Beasley so far (BRs or BR crosses by the looks of them). Lenore the Jersey Not-So-Giant's three eggs (one disappeared into the ether early on) don't have pips yet, but I do hear peeping when I lift her, so I expect bitties from her soon as well.

Welcome. We are also locating foundation stock. What color silkies do you have?

Morning all! My new silkie girls are settling in nicely and the boys are learning(slowly) to be nice to them. They are beautiful specimens of their breed so I am hoping to have some real nice quality chicks this spring. Galadriel has proved to be a more assertive girl and she got into an argument with Frodo yesterday. Nothing major and I was right there in case any separation had to be made. I am happy that now I have two good breeding pens of quality silkies after a year and a half of acquiring good stock.

King Olof decided to take a shot at me yesterday after I got home. All I was doing was walking to the terrorist coop to get the feeder and all of a sudden I had a rooster flogging me. He didnt count on the speed with which my foot connected with his body though. He was between me and the run fencing and he bounced pretty good when I sent him flying. I may have some years and fat on me, but I can move pretty quick when I need to. Needless to say, after the boot and me chasing him all around the backyard and the coop with a rake in my hand, he is now carefully keeping some distance between us. His brother, Hane, just watched. He is more respectful and will carefully take food from me and feed the girls. Olof still has some manners to work on. Sorry to say this Rancher, but I am getting about 2 dozen eggs a day, mostly from my rir pen. They are laying machines and I usually have a dozen by 8 am.

A gorgeous day today. Going to make some hot pepper jam as I bartered eggs for some organically grown red hot peppers. They are just beautiful. Going to put some in the dehydrator as well for winter use. Acorns are dropping well so I will be out gathering them and maybe crushing some to see if the chickens eat them. Dang grey squirrels are invading my yard. Time for target practice again (and dinner!).

Enjoy the day everyone!

Keep me posted. I've not hatched BR's since there is some much going on. Mostly Dels and EE's. Just cuz I gave some Dels away and need to restock hens. I do intend to hatch BR's and orps come spring though.

Have I mentioned on this thread that my BR came at me and hopefully for the last time. I've been giving him a whack with a small stick when he comes at me and he has hurt me on two occasions. Well this last time, I had my small stick. It couldn't have been more than a half inch in diameter, but I connected with his head and completely knocked him out. I thought I had killed him and my heart dropped. Anyhow he came to, and laid there for a bit. HIs comb was bleeding. Now he stays clear pretty much though I do still carry the stick. I vowed never to hit him again. I'm not a violent person and I do like him.

Lately I've been trying to get as close to him as I can and give him some scratch. I pet him a little at night when things are dark in the coop. I'm determined to make friends with him. He doesn't roost but sleeps on the floor near the door of the coop.
