NY chicken lover!!!!

My girls are still laying like gangbusters and I am moving 5 dozen eggs out to a fellow worker today and 3 dozen tomorrow. 3 dozen went over the weekend while I was gone. Good thing as feed is sixteen and change for 50 pounds and I am buying a bag every 2 weeks.

How many Chickens do you have to only go through 50#'s very two weeks? My 22 in the layer pen are going through about 10 pounds a day.

I have a pack of feed vacuums. Molt and broodiness have consumed the older ladies, and the younger point-of-lay girls are lazy slackers and haven't gotten going yet. They're lucky I like them!

It turns out that I have a few cockerels who are just now showing themselves. The Jersey Giant/Sussex cross (Hopalong, the injured chick!) is my favorite by far. He's a big, handsome boy - mostly black with that beetle-green sheen, and with a few bright rusty-red feathers shot through. I have to put up a photo of him. He's also a nice guy so far, and is now going around trying to woo the ladies by dropping treats in front of them. It's like watching a young teenage kid trying to get college girls to notice him by handing them a bouquet of daisies. There are two Brahma cross cockerels as well. They've taken after their mothers' breed and are late bloomers. My sister wants one of them, and I'll see what happens with the other. Finally, there's a Dominique cross. He's interesting - he has a very slim build, almost like that of a gamecock. He's also a bit of a pill, so he's on the tentative Camp Crock-Pot list.

Last year, I didn't have a mature rooster, so the three SS boys could jockey for dominance without interference. This time around, Captain Morgan is definitely in charge. As he's only 15 months old himself, and hasn't even fully grown in his own spurs, he has plenty of energy to rule the roost. He spotted two of the young punks in a showdown, and immediately broke it up and sent them both packing with hefty pecks for their troubles, after which they scooted as soon as he so much as looked in their direction. This may be why we haven't heard any crowing attempts - they're intimidated by Papa! Good. Keep 'em in line, Captain!

Ginny-- Our new year's day hatch ameracauna just started laying this past week. It seems like it took forever. They're late bloomers.

Lord have mercy! I've got some CR's that I hatched and the roosters haven't started to crow yet, which usually comes before the hens lay. The hens have yet to lay also. I can't stand it. They're at least six months and big as all get out. I'm worried they may never lay.

I found out today that the spot on my brother's hip bone is for sure bone cancer, so it's spread further.
