Your brother, you, and your families will be in my prayers!

Times two, I'm so sorry.

Sorry to hear about your brother's health challenge. I don't know much about bone cancer, but the word cancer makes me think, it's time to get tough. There will be lots for him to do,and lots for all close to him to learn to support him. Keep us up to date, so we can support you. Prayers are on the way.

Now , now don't be to hasty. It is fall and there is less day light. Maybe they're taking a rest. Good garden o' peas, you try pushing out a baby every day or so and you'll need a rest too.

You ever see a hen after she's laid an egg? She just gets up and stands there for a few minutes. Probably waiting for the pain to go away. It must hurt, why else would they scream like they do after they've laid an egg?

I think they go broody on purpose cuz for 21 or so days they don't have to lay an egg. Plus when they brood chicks they don't lay either.

Now to mention no having a rooster jump on their back.

Around here they go broody a lot.
Mine have never laid. I have 17 potential layers (more coming of age soon) and the MOST I have ever gotten all summer is 6 eggs. That's less than 50% and just not acceptable with the cost of feed going up and up and up. (And it was only for one week that I got that many each day....now I get 3, maybe 5 eggs a day....never more than 5)

I really fed up with them all. Remember I just started this about 16 months ago, so NONE of these birds are beyond laying age. Heck, some of them are only 9 months old and still no eggs. Sure they laid their first egg, but then NOTHING, notta.

Cass are you feeding them poptarts again? =) =)

Seriously tho, I have 60 chickens and only get 12-18 a day. Definitely slowing down. To be fair, a large portion of those are POL or almost POL pullets, so I give them a break. 15 are chicks, waaaay too young to lay.

So I have 14 fully old enough hens in one coop and I think 10 in the other. A few broodies in there too. So let's say 20 are laying and I am getting 12-18 a day - but that now includes a few little eggs from the newest layers (easter hatch). Some of mine are probably molting. Just put light in two coops starting at 4AM last weekend.

Mine are molting some....others are just slackers. My problem with them is they never ramped up production for summer and now it's winter again. I have no eggs in reserve for winter.. I'm not amused. They sure to eat enough, I am going through 50 pounds of food a WEEK. That's insane, not to meantion expensive.

Wow.. I go through about 75 pounds a week, but I have 60 birds.. I'll probably start going through more now since I'm not allowing them to free range except when I am home due to the hawk migrations.. =(
