NY chicken lover!!!!

Well I"m glad we're all catching mice.  Cat's are just to much work for me.  If I have to clean up after an animal it might as well be something that gives something back other than poop.

Not all cats are good mousers you know.   It's too bad someone doesn't breed a line of good mousers.  Around here they'd be fixed before you realized they're good hunters and by then it's too late to breed them.  :gig

Good garden o' peas, these CR's are still not layiing.  I think Scott shows birds and maybe he's bred the laying out of them.  They are big and may make good dinner, but not an egg to be seen.  7months is way to long to wait for eggs. IMO.

I have one of those said useless cats...he just lays there and watches the mouse...he will walk up to you and meow...like "aren't you going to fix that?" I swear he just would watch a mouse eat his food. It really makes me miss my old cat . He was a killer in every sense of the word, he would bring back bunnies, baby raccoons, squirrels, mice, shrews...it was always disgusting to open the back door and every week he would catch at least five things. My neighbors joked that he patrolled the neighborhood...the three closest houses were his to protect. The cutest thing I ever saw was his footprints in the snow...he patrolled the property in the same pattern every day four or five times a day. He passed away five years ago and I still miss him everyday.

question for silkie owners...do silkies molt horribly? One of my local friends might be getting some and I was curious if they molt one feather at a time or full molting . Everyone I've spoken to that owns them say they are so child friendly and beautiful.

Have a great day everyone :)

Framac - no I don't use light. I used to but it was a pain.

Vmdaniel - I considered getting a gun don't have the money. Also worried since we live near a school and have kids who play in the woods. Houses to near. I've been using a trap and special peanut butter sandwich. It doesn't kill them but they don't seem to come back.

What was a pain about using lights?

I have 2 lights in my coop on a plug, and that plugs into a timer. Unless the power goes out, I am sound as a pound.

My only question would be about the wear on their bodies. They are healthy, so I don't think it is affecting them too much.

Framac.

Do they get any cuter?
I don't think there is much cuter than day old chicks scratching the ground and eating with mama hen. This makes 23 chicks "Mama" has hatched this year. 1st 4, then 11, but she raised 15 in that brood (she took in 4 orphans) and now 8. So she hatched 23 this year, but raised more than that.

Anyone making the trek down to Sussex this weekend?

How was the Yankee Classic?

Framac

The Fall Classic had some nice birds..I don't know he total there. My Light Sussex got Best Sussex, but I was the only one there with them.

I am thinking I need to Target practice also..

Ginny--congrats on your kill. Practice does make perfect!

Stony--congrats on Mommas great accomplishment. She is an amazing hen. I am hoping that my Elanor does the same for me in the spring.

I went out to put away my silkies before work and discovered that somehow Little Man managed to get into the run with my younger silkies and was busily laying down the law to my younger roos Frodo and Legolas. Poor Frodo was hiding in the dog kennel with the girls while Legolas was trying to avoid Little Man. I finally got Little Man out and shooed him and his women back into their own run. The boys seem no worse for wear. Made sure I loaded everyone up with food and water when I got home as we are supposed to have rain later. Nothing like filling feeders and waterers in the dark!

We have an Amish familynear that processes chickens for $1.50....if anyone wants their info, please pm me. They live near Vernon.
