Take a look at her vent. A hen that is laying will have a pinky, moist vent and the space between her pelvis will be wider than one that is not. A non laying hen's vent will be dry, whitish.

Oh, yeah. I completely forgot about that! I got so excited that a new one is laying I completely forgot the basics. Of course, no egg today..

I'll have a look tomorrow.

Dh started building the second coop, which we decided to attach to the first and knock out the wall to make one larger coop. I will put up a temporary fence inside the coop to separate the two flocks during our upcoming storm. During that time we have to rebuild fencing.
The original coop was 10 x 12'. The addition is about 8 x8'. I can place lay boxes on a interior wall, freeing up exterior walls for roosting. There should be plenty of space for 39 chickens. Depending on how things go, I may get rid of two black australorp roos. The largest of my three has definite roo behavior. He seems like he will be a good one.
Dh says he saw a hawk hanging around the other day across the road from us. I'll be stringing up fishing line tomorrow. Back and forth above my head from tree to fence to the coop roof, etc. Keep stringing it back and forth so a hawk would have a heck of a time getting through.
I have two shows for my business next weekend. I've been BUSY cranking out product. I'm tired!
If I don't get a chance to get on again, hope everyone and all peeps stay safe in the storm! At least we have time to prepare!

OK New Yorkers, buckle down the hatches as the storm is coming. I hope it is not a bad as Irene was. Living in the Catskills we got hit really hard on the Irene storm and now they are saying this is going to be mean. Is everyone preparing for this?

Oh yeah, I'm prepareing.....My SO, Ray, is part of the goverenor's "Emergency Command Center" staff. That means I get to weather all these storms alone. I HATE that. So the list is 16 items long and growing. All have to be done before his first Command Center shift Saturday Night at 8 pm. (The most important being making sure I have gas for the generator and that it runs well. Our basement floods in regular storms, it gets really bad in Irene like situations so I need the generator to run the sump pump or risk losing the furnace, water system and hot water heater)

So the things are getting put where I can find them, the chicken coops are getting extra waterers put in them and feed is being bought on Saturday instead of my original plan of a Monday Feed run.

During Irene I had a tree fall on the house and a tree fall across the road taking out the power and phones before he got home from the Command Center. (then he had the nerve to complain about having to take a detour to get home. Poor baby. I had no power, no phone, and no way of getting out of my driveway to go anyplace, if I so desired. He didn't get much sympathy from me, that's for darn sure)

Hope everyone gets their list done on time. Remember to shut any ventalation you opened for the summer that might let wind driven rain inside the coop.

Black hawk and Chinook helicopters were flying in and out all day transporting supplies to the towns. It was the only way to bring supplies inn as the bridges and roads were closed.

So tomorrow it's go buy more chicken feed in case we are hit again and stock up on my food as the supermarket may get hit again and then food will be hard to come by. Chickens will be on "lock down", fill the gas tank on the car and fill an extra tank or two for the generator. Here we go again ....

Once this is over you might want to consider finding a place in your home to put up a week or two's worth of self stable food, remembering "stock what you eat, eat what you stock" to rotate it regularly. It is Saturday already and the store shelves are going to be empty by noon. Supermarkets only keep 3 days worth of food in their "stock room" and when something like this threatens that is gone in less than 24 hours. Chicken feed, on the other hand should be easy to come by. (At least I hope so, cuz I need some and not because of the storm, because they eat like little piggies)

Morning all! Battening down the hatches here for Sandy. Got the leaves raked out of the front and back so the drain pipes are unobstructed. Raked the back ones directly into the terrorist run and they are thrilled to have something to dig through this morning. It also gives them something to walk on besides dirt and mud. Dh got the trash pump working so we can pump out the back yard because it will flood our basement with that much rain. Generator is ready to go. Have to go food shopping after work. Hopefully there will be something left. Might pick up more feed as well for 'just in case'. All the coops are in good shape for the storm. Dh is putting the side windows in the terrorist coop today to keep out blowing rain and I will close up vents tonight or tomorrow. I am sure work will be nuts today with the storm coming. People get crazy and nasty when things like this occur. Sigh. Be safe everyone.

DH is making a supply run to bj's this morning for canned soups, bottled water, things like that. He has the tendency to be unprepared and not expect the worst. I grew up in Alabama, had many bad hurricanes (Lived in Key West, FL when Andrew hit) so I basically know what we need. I will probably head out to PC and TSC today while he is out to just pick up things that I think we will need.
The birds are going into the barn for the storm, I have been putting it off because the weather mellowed out, but I will do that today. After the storm, if the weather remains mild, I'll just put them back out.

These stupid laws make me crazy. I laid in bed last night at my son's home here in AL and listened to a dog bark and bark and bark. My chickens never crow nearly as much as dogs. What's more they don't crow all night long either.
