NY chicken lover!!!!

OK New Yorkers, buckle down the hatches as the storm is coming. I hope it is not a bad as Irene was. Living in the Catskills we got hit really hard on the Irene storm and now they are saying this is going to be mean. Is everyone preparing for this?

I'm in Alabama now for the month. DW is taking care of the chickens. I haven't seen the news since these young uns, don't watch much TV, but I intend to check things out.

"rain rain go away".

I'm wondering how bad it'll be up here. Sounds like we're just getting rain. We lived in Albany last year during Irene and didn't get much more than rain. All my friends and family in CT were without power for two weeks though. and I guess it's supposed to hit CT just as bad as last year, if not worse.

wow, what a gorgeous day! and nice to be home early enough to enjoy some free range time with the gang! I made them a Pie with leftover whipped squash, and the broccoli from leftover broccoli soup, topped with black oil sunflower seeds... it's what I will use to lure them back home when it's time to come in...

Cute invisible man !
we use bread they Love that ...or just put their food in the pen ..I feed them twice a day . I dont give them any extra food when they are free ranging ..during the day .
So they take notice when I am fixing them a plate ...I mix some of their layer with a little apple cider vinegar water ..& veg / fruit scraps that have been food processed for easy mix ability / easy to eat ..

Once this is over you might want to consider finding a place in your home to put up a week or two's worth of self stable food, remembering "stock what you eat, eat what you stock" to rotate it regularly. It is Saturday already and the store shelves are going to be empty by noon. Supermarkets only keep 3 days worth of food in their "stock room" and when something like this threatens that is gone in less than 24 hours. Chicken feed, on the other hand should be easy to come by. (At least I hope so, cuz I need some and not because of the storm, because they eat like little piggies)
Food is purchased - ready to roll. Supermarkets were busy but no issues getting food. During Irene all the stores in my area were wiped out as they all sit on the river including the animal feed store!!!

I have 150 pounds of chicken feed (layer and All-Flock - I mix them), and plenty of dog and cat food, so the beasts are set for a bit. The pool is an excellent source of water for the critters, and it's easy to tap - you just open the drain on the sand filter and let 'er rip. I do need to go to the stupidmarket, but not for a whole lot, as I have canned food and things like rice, cereals, grains, and dried beans up the wazoo. Since I'm out towards the sticks, we don't tend to get as much in the way of "oh noooooes we're all gonna DIIIIIIE!" panic in Hannaford anyway - everyone sort of expects to lose power now and then and adjusts accordingly. The East Greenbush Walmart, on the other hand, probably looks like the hordes have descended upon it.

The generator is ready to roll, and there's gas for it. It only needs to run long enough to run the well pump for showers and to boost the freezer and fridge occasionally - that's good enough. LED lights and candles are my friends.

I'm scheduled to work in my rathole of a store tomorrow and Monday, and gas is somewhat less expensive in Taxachusetts, so I'll fill up over there. It should be a real treat. I hate "panic mode," as people get nasty - although, as I am big and scary, I don't tend to get yelled at too frequently.

I haven't had an extended power outage since I bought the house two years ago, but I have the feeling that it's going to happen this time. Argh. I'd be most ticked off about losing everything in my freezer. The big freezer and the one in the bottom of the fridge are both packed pretty full and have freezer packs in them - between that and the occasional generator boost, I shouldn't lose too much should power go by the wayside for a while.

I'm ready too... 10 gallons of gas for the generator, 10 gallons of kero for the heater if the Nor'Easter slams into the hurricane and brings snow... I have a full tank of oil for the furnace, but I never set the generator up for the water or furnace... it's powerful enough, I just never did get around to that, so just in case... I have 11 gallons of water for the animals, 10 for me, and lots of non-perishable food. I picked up another 50 lbs of feed today along with 24 lbs each of dog and cat food. all the batteries and phones are charged, and have a pile of candles
I replaced the burned out sump pump (thanks Irene...) today, and it is installed and functioning, with 2 good pumps, I can stay on top of the water. Folks 'round here are not panicking, but preparing for the worst. most people have taken everything from the first floor and moved it upstairs, the town trucks are in position, the town buildings and schools are sandbagged... I'm just praying that we don't get slammed like last year...

that little ghost is my favorite Halloween decoration. the family puts it out every year, it's about the size of a 4 year old child.

Just scheduled for rain here, so I guess I gotta go to work. =( Hubby (who works in NYC) is staying home tho - woohoo! :)

Spent about an hour this evening chasing a little brown leghorn who took her first trip outside and got lost in the woods. finally got her in the area of the coop, but was never able to shoo her in. Hope she's ok tomorrow. :(

Yeah, we were in Rotterdam, NY and we lost power for 3 days. In 5 years of living in Rotterdam, we NEVER lost power for more than 2 hours. So being on the mountain will be a whole new experience for us. I am more worried about the high winds, trees near the house, and the possibility of getting snow or ice because of all the rain. I keep asking DH if he is sure that we wants to stay on the mountain, if there is flooding down in schoharie, he won't be able to get to work. At the same time, I don't want to be by myself while a bad storm is going on. Storms up here come on fast and furiously, it is scary....and it ALWAYS hails. Hoping for just rain....a little rain, not buckets upon buckets upon buckets.
