NY chicken lover!!!!

I got home from getting the girls and voting this afternoon to find my favorite bird Snuggles dead in the yard.  I didn't see any marks on her.  I don't even know how she got out.  My bantams were all penned up and it's been 2 days since they had been let out for supervised time out.  I haven't been letting them out as often as the large fowl because everything seems to think they'll make a nice snack.

I wouldn't mind going being I have a few birds I would like to sell, but I have a union meeting and my in laws are coming for dinner.

Tab, what are you looking to get rid of? I am starting up a new flock. Maybe I could get some from you. I am in Kirkville.

Welcome! I got some roos, but I'm sure that is not what you are looking for. Rancher Hicks is from the Syracuse area as well, he may have some.

I am thinking I should have followed Rancher's idea and traded at least the Americauna rooster in when I discovered that he was a he. He still jumps the girls without their permission, he has a surly demeanor, goes around grumbling, and I think he may be stupid to boot! Everyone has free ranging, out of the pen, and out of the electric fence. Bella and I were supervising it got dark, and I wanted to get to yoga. Everyone except one hen and Reveille trooped back to the coop. Those two wouldn't be shoed in, finally picked up the hen, but R just kept avoiding, and going the wrong way. At last I had to move sections of the electric fence so he could find his way back. DUMB. It crossed my mind to leave him out...

Frozen water here too. But in the pen. The bowl in the coop was ok. They have probably not figured out how to drink from it, though.

Ok all my fellow NY Chicken Lovers...I have a way of letting the two orpington hens out in the morning without the letting Roo out. He's been cooped up for the past couple of days now until I find a way to get him out of there, yet still "confining him" so I can place him somewhere else. Now that I've been letting the hens out, I would really like to eventually be able to let ALL of the chickens out (three silkies and these two orpington hens) at the same time to free range. What is a good way to do this? The only reason I never let them out all together before was because of my bigger Orpington roo. Now that he's out of the picture (for now) how do I do this? Should I let the silkies out little by little and see how they get along with the bigger hens? Should I stay out there with them to keep everyone in their place? They definitely see each other every day since the day I got this new coop - it has a run underneath the coop and the orpington hens go up to all the time and are face to face with the silkies, just with a piece of wire mesh between them. Whats the best way to go about this or do you think it's still not a good idea to have bigger chickens in with the silkies? I have never had a problem before with these two hens, they are great, friendly around my kids, I've never seen them attack the silkies or attempt to the few times they were in the yard together.

I would let everyone except the roo out together and be there to watch. That's my vote.

My two Roos are now separated from each other. One is in the pen that contains the coop and the hens. The dumb one, is out in the electric fence, with the light duty, read that as temporary, tractor supply coop, by himself. Guess who will be moving on one way or another?

If there is someone who can take this boy on, it is possible that he could be fine for you. I have zero experience with roosters, and my oldest chickens are only eighteen months old. He is very pretty, full muff and beard, grey/green legs, off white, grey some red, and touches of black. But for newbies like me, one rooster is enough, and I pick Earl, the Speckled Sussex.

If anyone wants Reveille, he would be free to a good home.

Well I did it - I finally got that mean rooster out of the coop and into a pen by himself. It was a tricky process but I was successful! So I was able to clean out the Orp's coop, clean the silkie's coop and now everyone - the three silkies (two hen and a roo) and the two orpington hens are ALL out free ranging and HAPPY! There was a small squabble between the Roo and the orpington hens but that was it. I think he was just letting them know - "these are my girls so watch it!" LOL It is so nice to finally have everyone free ranging again. My big roo isn't happy but I don't care. He's getting what he deserves - a big fat time out!
