NY chicken lover!!!!

I am selling all of my Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. I have the ad in the For Sale forum, Chickens 8 weeks & older. This is the url.
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/725549/liquidating-my-blue-laced-red-wyandotte-flock

I am selling them because I need to get back down to a reasonable number of birds, and I need the room since I also now have Silkies, Orps & Coronation Sussex that I'm working with.

I have emailed you and responded in your for sale listing. I am interested in the flock. Please get back to me.

I am also looking for at least one each (hen/pullets) cochin, polish, and or orpington. Will consider others. Just want a nice mixed flock.

ALIOOP -  my dominiques were much to noisy.  They would get in the coop first in the evening and then squawk like crazy until the others came in.

PYXIS  -  unless you have a source for Silky chick extras I'd advise against breeding them.  Why?  From my experience they don't lay well and aren't good eating.  The auctions I've been to, they don't go for much.  It would cost you more to drive the auction than you would get.

For your frame you may wish to go to Home Depot and  buy some metal attachments.  They will help with the angles. Look in the joist hanger section and you're sure to find something that you can use. They have an adjustable hanger.

NEWCHKNLVR -  Do you have any pics?  How many chickens do you have and how big is the coop?   No matter what you read I don't recommend babying your chickens. Unless of course you choose to.  I would not leave them open at night as predators will pick them off and that will be the end of them.

I'm not doing it for money :) I just love silkies. Most likely, aside from test hatches, I'll only be selling hatching eggs. And we have lots of 4h-ers around here that keep show flocks. Really, I know silkies don't lay well - my lazy full grown hen lays only an egg or two a week. I just love the breed - which is why I think most people breed the birds they do.

Actually my silkies have been laying relentlessly since early spring. I am getting about three eggs a day from five hens and except for the two leghorn crosses, no one else is laying.

Processed the ten extra roos in late summer and made the first pot of soup last week with the meanest one. Absolutely delicious and tender even though he was over a year old. He was the smallest of the bunch and looked pretty scrawney, but turned out to be very solid and had a nice layer of fat. And yes, he tasted like chicken

Ah, this must be the Craigslist ad I seen tonight. Was going to mention it to Marquisella, glad you are already on board!

It is;)
I wasn't ready for anything young enough to need a brooder but I will take pullets that can go outside. I am pretty sure sue had some chicks. But now this changes everything! ;););)

Just a heads up. I'm considering ordering chicks again from Back to the Farm the beginning of the year. Perhaps sooner. Now I have to order 25 chicks and since I don't want or need that many I'm offering to let someone go in with me.

My intent is to order New Hampshire. But he does have other breeds.

Last year I ordered Delaware and had only one taker on my offer. They only wanted six chicks.

According to the web site chicks are $2.50 each. With shipping it comes to $4.10 per chick. Chicks will be straight run of course and you will have to pick them up at my place.

Other breeds may be more per chick but the NH are $2.50 each unless he raises the price before I place an order.

This offer is contingent on whether I place an order with some one else. Give it some thought and let me know. I don't expect to order chicks for delivery earlier than the first of the year. I don't want chicks in late may like last year.

Morning all! I have finally recovered from the madness of the weekend. Working retail on these holidays is a real bear, especially when everyone comes in with that "holiday" attitude!

I nuked the hens coop yesterday again just to be sure that anything that might have hatched is dead. I inspected the girls and find no signs of mites and did not see anything when I cleaned out the coop. I do believe all cooties have been erradicated. Gave them and the terrorists the turkey carcass from thanksgiving and they demolished it in short order. My hens are still molting but at the tail end so the extra protein boost should help. I havent seen the hawk or the falcon around lately so maybe they got the message that there are no free meals here. I still wont freerange unless I am out there though.

Rancher--I have to say my silkie girls are pretty consistant layers when they arent broody. I have two who are broody now and one who still lays me an egg every day. Of course the broodys are out of luck cause I am not having chicks now. I have a couple of rir hens that want to be broody as well. I am like really? Now? Its 30 degrees out!

The colder weather and lower light has finally slowed down my layers a little. Only getting a little over a dozen eggs a day now. I hope it stays that way as I have a lot of egg customers!

Have a nice day everyone!

I'm up early today since I'm headed home on Wed. I've bought a few things and hope to get everything in the suit cases. I had intended to leave things (cloths) here but since they are moving to Canada in May that is not going to be the case.

Plans are for them to come home in Dec. but with three kids it's not likely they will remember to bring anything I leave.

I'v e been sleeping later than usual since I don't have to get up and let the girls out. I'm sure there's lots to do at home since I hadn't put the hoses away and winterized the chicken runs. I'm fearful of what DW"isn't" telling me.

Some basic housekeeping questions:
Now that winter is coming at us again does everyone deal with the ammonia smells that can build up in the coop? My coop is a very well insulated 8 x 12' shed and I always need to provide extra ventilation during the winter. The girls have access to the outside everyday and are closed up at night. I use pine chips on the floor and everyday rake up any poop I can see everyday and remove it. Some my questions are:
What does everyone use for floor bedding? Hay? Chips?
How does everyone deal with odors if any? Does anyone sprinkle lime or anything else on the floor?
Who uses the deep liter approach?
Do you use a poop board under the roost?
Feedback please....
I installed a poop deck under the roost beams and under that I have the food and water. Almost all of the poop is contained on the poop deck which is made with melamine board for easy cleaning and eliminates the need for wood chips since the chickens never actually walk directly on the poop deck. I use wood shavings for the rest of the coop and only have to remove the occasional turds every once and a while. But my girls spend the entire day outside free ranging and only come back to grab some food or roost for the night. I'm sure things will be different when we get snow and colder weather.

Hey all!
Its our first winter here, and with the birds we really have no idea what to expect.. We have a coop for them, but its a basic wood building. They should be fine right? We have a heated water container for them, so it will not freeze one them. They can get out of the snow.. This should be ok for them right?
Last year for the 1st time, I went around my barn & put up plastic over wall cracks, etc. used foam calk to fill other holes, and had a terrible winter with birds getting sick. Needles to say, I've pulled down the plastic & opened up the holes again. Chickens are ok as long as there are no large holes that drafts can come through directly at the chickens. Sometimes there is actually snow on the floors of the coops ifs it is very windy & snowing, but it never seemed to bother them up on the roosts. MY chickens won't go outside when snow is on the ground...whooses!.
