My DH and I have decided to have a get together with our chicken folk friends. Chicken talk, food, wine tasting, birds, chinese auction, and what ever else we come up with. It will be fun and whoever decides to come is welcome. I will PM my address to any who are interested.
Keep in mind that this get together is for fun and enjoying each others' company. People don't always agree, thus my one rule for this event is that everyone be civil and polite to one another. ( This is not meant to offend. Just a precaution.)

I'm coming.

What can I do to help? I ran the Chinese Auction last year and can do so again this year, if you wish....or give advice about what I did wrong (and right) last year to who ever is doing it this year.

I have name tags around here too....forgot them at last year's. (We used Duct tape, which I never leave home without, instead)

Might want to PM Annie (Happyhensny) about what she did that worked, what she would do differently and what she had on hand, etc.
The gathering at her house went very smoothly with everyone pitching in to help as needed....and we had to take tents down cuz of wind....last year our gathering was the day before IRENE...omg...Let's not repeat THAT again, please.

Do you think a porta potty would be necessary?
I was thinking if people wanted to bring a bottle of their favorite wine and we had some dixie cups, we could have a "wine tasting". If anyone wanted to bring a dish to pass or something to donate to the chinese auction just let us know so we can start a list.
Cass if you want to handle the auction that is fine with me. I have some tables here I can use to set it up on.

We did not have a porta potty last year.... Did anyone have a problem with bathroom facilities last gathering?

However, Tab, I don't know your water situation or where your bathroom is located. Annie's was on the first floor near back door....and she had city water (septic tank tho) Annie priced porta potty for weekend and it was going to be $110....which is exactly the amount the auction raised. So really, it's your call, knowing what you know about your situation.

CHINESE AUCTION PEOPLE!!! Start checking the sales, rounding up Christmas presents that just "weren't you", and thinking about hatching eggs, etc. Last year we had such a variety of things, it was wonderful. We had craft books, chicken books, food, chickens, hatching eggs, a rabbit and cage for it, hmm...what else? There was soooo much stuff, it was wonderful. Oh and a WINE basket...omg, that was gorgeous. And a Coffee basket. So, it's not just chicken stuff...it's anything that people would be interested in winning....the goal is to raise some money to offset the costs the host family incur.

I'll keep a list on the gatherings thread of what people think that they are contributing so y'all know how much money to bring. Does anyone remember what I priced the tickets at last year? It seemed to be the right dollar amount and I am not sure what I sold them for.

I am sooo excited.

Please explain a Chinese Auction.

In a Chinese Auction you buy 2 part tickets and put one part in the bag/cup that corresponds to the items you wish to win. When the time comes to determine a winner one ticket is drawn from the accumulated tickets and that is the winner. Kinda like a raffle, except you get to determine which prizes you are in the running for, instead of accepting the prize they claim you won. If you have the ticket with the corresponding number drawn then you win.

Last year we had a wonderful assortment of prizes donated ....and I mean something for EVERYONE....some cups (I used cups, most people use bags) were almost full of hopeful winners....2 of them only had ONE ticket in them. I think Annies kids put her tickets in the ones with the least number of entries so they would win something....cuz she had a surprised look on her face over a couple of things she won...but she did let the kids do it for her. LOL

I am pretty sure I sold tickets for 10/$5 or 25/$10....so for 10 bucks you could enter in 25 different prizes or put all 25 in one prize drawing. (I don't recommend that tho....once, at a family reunion, I put all my tickets in the only thing that interested me and my aunt won the item...she only put ONE ticket in....I still hate her for that. LOL)

Alan and I are in. I'll do up another wine basket, and volunteer to bring drinks.

First thing he said when I told him: "No hurricanes this year, right?" We hope not! Irene's relatives can stay home this year.
