October 2021 Hatch-A-Long

I want to try that next! Did you order fertile, or did you just pop down to the grocery store to really try your luck?

You should do it! I didn’t order these. Some guy I sold fertile chickens eggs to, gave me a few dozen. We ate a couple and decided to throw a dozen in the incubator. They’re so tiny!

Ive only hatched (or attempted to hatch) chicken, duck, turkey and emu.

We only just got the Bator - always done broody hatches before. It is a cheap Chinese one, so I was very particular when setting it up and checked it over thoroughly for cold and hot spots yesterday, with a graphing sensor in overnight. Aside from the humidity being way out, I now have it's probe calculated and it's maintaining consistent heat.

Just itching to get some quail eggs in there tho.

I just swapped out my infertile rooster for his son Cookie a few days ago and have a broody so I'm hoping the 8 eggs I set under her are fertile! Due to hatch on 5th Oct.
Cockerel Biscuit is in the coop but rooster didn't like him mating so now hopefully Cookie and Biscuit can get along and provide fertile eggs.

.. I just candled, and 3 out of 8 weren't fertile, just yolkers. I expected some to not be fertilised as I only changed the boys over a few days before...
So, 5 eggs left are looking good!! :jumpy

33 out of 48 developing on day 7. 7 out of the 12 shipped eggs developing but most have scarey unstable air bubbles. Given the eggs only came from 3 hrs away, and were packed and secured like fort knox, one can only assume its to do with the pressure changes from the hills and humidity, to the mountains, to out here in the dry dusty flat land.

Maybe so, or someone gave them a big shake-up. I have 3 that are suspect, but it's either all or none with my turning trays, so leaving them to their fate to a degree. It's really hard to see through my Orpington eggs - they're only light brown, but the shells are quite thick.

Do you guys rearrange the order of your eggs in the incubator so they don't spend the entire time in the same temp zones, and if so, how often?

My Bator tends to fluctuate a degree or two in some places. I have a central probe and a cold spot probe, there's one hot corner(might be due to my lizard's t5 controller in the same cubby space) and I've not put any eggs near that side.

Do you think it'd give better hatch results? My Bator has a built in candler, which actually kinda works for the white eggs. Still only day 1 so way too early to see who's taking and who isnt.

Depending on incubator, I move them. My janoel 48 I move them. I really don't like it. But the cheapie fire hazard 12 egg incubator I got 2 hatches out of I loved! And then the turner broke... so manual rolling.

I candled last night on day 11, typically the only day I will candle. Deja Vu to my last incubation, once again I have 11/14 developing, with two duds and one early quitter.

There is something odd going on in one egg that I have never seen. There is a healthy embryo but it seems to be developing solely on one side of the egg. Makes me think maybe a turning problem, but then again it's the same size as all the others and they're turning fine. Hm...

Set 15 eggs yesterday and will likely add a few more today. Two had been refrigerated for over a week so we’ll see what they do.Expected hatch date 10/16. All silkie and silkie/polish crosses, except for a single Silverudds Blue/EE egg that I added just for fun.😊
