OCTOBER HATCH-A-LONG!!! 2015

Wow. She was totally shrink wrapped and at the wrong End!
before and after i lathered her wuth gentle qtip moistness. She is back in the incbator half shelled. I don't think she is ready yet to hatch for some vessels had blood. I'm not about to force her out. I think I gave her a good start. She drank from the qtip too. Just wow.

Morning :) ty for asking. The chick i lethargic, not looking promising. I may loose this one. She wont even try and reposition herself. She is balled up down in the wrong end of the shell. She has no signs of being eager to get out. Her peeping is very seldom. Which initially I thought she was a quitter.
The membrane has the look of finishing up the absorption of blood. I pulled it back and noticed her eyes are not opening. This is day 22 of incubation. All the eggs have endured the same conditions. The other three collected from this time frame are hatched and healthy.she's Still in incubation. Lefts hope when I return from work she's at lest tring to kick.or open her eyes.

Ok, tomorrow is lock down day and I am going to be out of town for the weekend. (bad planning on my part, but really couldn't be helped)

My wonderful DH is going to lock them down for me. This is basically my thing so I left him all supplies and directions.

Needless to say, I will be texting him every hour asking the humidity! Lol

Hopefully, they will not start pipping until after I get back on Sunday.

To complicate things, our new shed is going in on Monday. I've got to get it converted and big chicks over before I move my 3 weeks in the little coop and my newborn in the cage they are currently in. I guess I'll come back running! Lol (or new chicks will be in a box a couple days)

Great job! I used a little antibiotic ointment per some of the forums (not the kind with pain relief) to keep the membrane moist. You will probably have to help the chick out at this point. If the membrane is not bloody, continue to help peel away a little at a time. Mine had a lot of really thick jelly like membrane and I was scared I caused damage but it's alive and well. I've heard if they're malpositioned you may have to help it until it's completely out and put it back in the Bator to dry. Also Give some electrolyte after its in the brooder. Hope it's doing well!!

Thank you for the advice! I should be at work but i took some PTO to figure out this baby chick. I left it in the incubator in that half shell state all night but it didnt budge an inch. So I started peeling again. I peeled as much of the shell off as i could. Where there was drips of fresh blood and i did not proceed at those areas. I held the egg in my hand with tissues so i could quick stop any blood leaks.

Well it was a very sad sight to see the chick, even though now completely 'free' not have any energy to kick or peep out at me or even open his eyes. Just laid there in that open shell, eyes closed, lethargic. I really started to feel like it was a lost cause. I put her in the bator and re-moistened the humidity cloths and just waited.

Well about 20 minutes go by, and i start hearing excited peeping. I check the bator and the chick finally is kicking around! YES! But the eyes are not open yet. I can see the eyeball moving underneath but the lids aren’t opening. I did a quick google search and one cause of eye lids not opening is... low humidity! Which is the exact situation i am dealing with with these Brown welsummer eggs. Even more time passed and she is acting frantic. (the other egg hatched with issues while on teh phone with wellsfargo, now that was interesting to ask the representative to 'hold on' while i qtip the dried out shell membranes, ha)

So i ran some warm/hot tap water and took that chick, wrapped my fingers under adn around her body, neck and head to support, and dunked her Up to her Neck into the warm water. I then used a qtip and dabbed warm water over her eyes. THEY OPENED! :) she is now in the bator, very energetic, peeping like mad, pecking at things and pretty much acting like she is late for the party. That sticky gooeyness that you mentioned was caked on her body really yucky like. Much like drying glue! The little hot bath i gave her really has her looking like a new hatchling!

here she is in the incubator, high humidity is making the windows foggy. But i think she is good to go. a foot dosesnt look complete straight, but i know how to straighten those toes out. yay, hopefully i come home to a still thriving baby welsummer :)

whew. what a start to my weekend. I am going to need 2 full days of recovery. But finally my staggered hatch is over. its been 6 days of a hatchlings arriving and im ready to find an egg big enough to hide into for 21 days. lol. this was surely a learning experience.

Awesome. Congratulations.

I love icelandics! So healthy and natural and diverse! I love it when animals get a chance to adapt into something so unique.

Did you know there is a pig breed that lived on an island that could help cure diabetes? They were going to all be killed and some were killed and are now being bred and are worth thousands! Land races are awesome!

These 6 buffs are healthy and running around the brooder.

This is the last buff to hatch, waiting for her to dry out in the incubator. I added a flannel to help her dry out as she hatched 12 hours ago and still looks wet. I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do?

1 chick quit when only half out of her shell :( 2 eggs that had pipped quit without further progress :( and another one that had hatched but seemed small was dead this morning :hit

So out of 14 eggs at the beginning of incubation and 11 going into lockdown we have 7 chicks. :jumpy :jumpy :jumpy :jumpy :jumpy :jumpy :jumpy

The two lonely Marans hatched this morning and are Blue Copper as expected! One coturnix quail is out and lots of movement with the others! So excited! First time incubating and with my home made bator!
