OCTOBER HATCH-A-LONG!!! 2015

The two lonely Marans hatched this morning and are Blue Copper as expected!  One coturnix quail is out and lots of movement with the others!  So excited!  First time incubating and with my home made bator!

Jealous, I'm having difficulties remaining calm as lockdown approaches.

I know its a dilution and I know they need two copies to express it their father is black but carries one copy of the lavender dilution gene(that's what the previous owner told me) my real question is if they could have gotten his lavender gene or not because black is dominant? Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

About half his chicks would get the lavender gene, but you won't know which chicks got it until you breed them with another carrier or lavender bird.

Congratulations everyone on the hatches! And so sorry about everyone's losses

Luvmigirls give her some raw egg yolk with a dropper. We got a tiny little oegb day old that couldn't hold his head up this last spring. He couldn't even stand. I was so worried we would lose him but I read about the egg yolk trick on here and he pulled through with flying colors. Note try not to get the yolk anywhere else on the chick as it turns to glue. Also sounds like you had sticky chick problems you can look it up by searching it. We had a lot of the same issues with my first batch and lost 2 after pip/zip one I was able to save. A little self blue oegb I named Crocket after she spent her first 24 hours in an empty country crock dish that I padded and turned I to a mini brooder inside the incubator as the slightly older chicks that hatched on their own were picking on her. She couldn't open her eyes either until I wiped them with a warm wet paper towel when I was helping her out. She's now a little miss ever so sweet bossy pants to the rest of the birds that hatched with her and some that didnt.

Awesome! Thanks junebuggena now I just have to breed them and see who I get what from gives me an excuse to hatch. But we are planning on some lavenders this year so that will make things easier.

I noticed you have a self blue OEGB. I'm pretty sure that self blue and lavender are the same gene, just for your future information.

Thank you for the advice! I should be at work but i took some PTO to figure out this baby chick. I left it in the incubator in that half shell state all night but it didnt budge an inch. So I started peeling again. I peeled as much of the shell off as i could. Where there was drips of fresh blood and i did not proceed at those areas. I held the egg in my hand with tissues so i could quick stop any blood leaks. Well it was a very sad sight to see the chick, even though now completely 'free' not have any energy to kick or peep out at me or even open his eyes. Just laid there in that open shell, eyes closed, lethargic. I really started to feel like it was a lost cause. I put her in the bator and re-moistened the humidity cloths and just waited. Well about 20 minutes go by, and i start hearing excited peeping. I check the bator and the chick finally is kicking around! YES! But the eyes are not open yet. I can see the eyeball moving underneath but the lids aren’t opening. I did a quick google search and one cause of eye lids not opening is... low humidity! Which is the exact situation i am dealing with with these Brown welsummer eggs. Even more time passed and she is acting frantic. (the other egg hatched with issues while on teh phone with wellsfargo, now that was interesting to ask the representative to 'hold on' while i qtip the dried out shell membranes, ha) So i ran some warm/hot tap water and took that chick, wrapped my fingers under adn around her body, neck and head to support, and dunked her Up to her Neck into the warm water. I then used a qtip and dabbed warm water over her eyes. THEY OPENED! she is now in the bator, very energetic, peeping like mad, pecking at things and pretty much acting like she is late for the party. That sticky gooeyness that you mentioned was caked on her body really yucky like. Much like drying glue! The little hot bath i gave her really has her looking like a new hatchling! here she is in the incubator, high humidity is making the windows foggy. But i think she is good to go. a foot dosesnt look complete straight, but i know how to straighten those toes out. yay, hopefully i come home to a still thriving baby welsummer whew. what a start to my weekend. I am going to need 2 full days of recovery. But finally my staggered hatch is over. its been 6 days of a hatchlings arriving and im ready to find an egg big enough to hide into for 21 days. lol. this was surely a learning experience.

I am soooo thrilled for you and your sweet baby. I had to rinse my chicks wing off. My husband was very nice not to comment as I stood with the chick on the bathroom counter drying it with a hairdryer

My hatch is finally over too! Congrats on a successful hatch. I will try to post more pictures

of all my chicks together soon. Here is one for all you hatchers still waiting to get you excited about your little peeps

Yes that seems to be what I've read too. Idk why they call it something different, what they call it seems to be based on breed. Idk but I love the color it is so stunning.

one of the chicks just died!! I don't know what happened, it was looking healthy and running around and I saw it drinking this morning and then they were all back under the heat lamp sleeping on and off and then they were running around again except for this one still under the light I lifted her out and she had bubbles coming out of her mouth and was cool to touch and was opening her beak but no sound coming out and died in my hand while I was trying to think of what to do!!

And the one that hatched last and was still drying in the incubator finally fluffed up and I put her in the brooder and she was running around too but now she's barely moving under the heat lamp. I dropper fed her electrolytes but no improvement in the last hour and now she's not opening her eyes anymore. I am so upset I have never had full size healthy looking chicks die on me before! The box they are being brooded in as well as the water/food dishes scrubbed and bleached and air dried days before they hatched and the temperature under the heat lamp is 100 degree and the water I gave them was boiled and cooled and the chick starter they have is from the same bag my older chicks are eating without issue. I'm panicking as to what is causing the deaths and there are 5 more chicks in there what do I do????
