OCTOBER HATCH-A-LONG!!! 2015

Maybe I should finish that thought. I am concerned about how late I can keep hatching due to weather. I am in east tennessee now and weather is nothing like it is in western ny. I wouldnt want to lose any chicks due to warmth concerns.
I live in Mississippi and we have scorching summers but we also get freezing winters as well I know people who hatch year-round. I plan 1 more after this 1. We wrap our our baby cage and keep a heat lamp going to ensure they're warm tho.

So just as I was getting to leave for the Dr.'s I saw that the egg that had a crack {not a pip} had split open and the chick was all over the place pushing eggs around. It must have started something up as the bantam started zipping right then when the new chick kicked the bantam egg up against 2 other eggs with the zip down between them. Aaaargg panic time. Since I already had inserted a tube so I could add water I guided a piece of warmed copper wire in and gave a small nudge, it rolled over, two egg chips flew and the bantam was hatched. Yup , late for the Dr. but it was worth it. Got home 4 hours later and still just the three of them. Remembering older days I hung up a couple of wet sheets and towels, put the kettle on and waited for the windows to steam up. Once it did I popped the hatch and moved the 3 to the MBP brooder. the readings on the incubator went from 68% up to 72% when I popped it so all good.
Here are the kids so far.

the first was a HighlineX.

The egg kicker, maranXamericauna.

My oegb. I think I know who mom was.

I can't help thinking that watching eggs hatch might be more entertaining at Xmas time than watching that fireplace they keep putting up.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I woke up this morning and one of my 23 week old girls(isa browns) is acting off. She was our first layer at 16 weeks and is one of my two favorite girls. I can't decide if something is wrong with her or not. Please help. She didn't run off with the flock to graze she did eat a bit of scratch and has been drinking a ton. No discharge from her eyes or nose but she seems tired. Her crop was very large this morning but no foul smelling breath, no solid masses in her crop that I can feel. It's a bit squishy feeling but pliable and I can feel the grit in there. Please help she did pick at grass a bit after I massaged her crop but I'm worried please any help would be appreciated.
Is it possible she's gone broody? My cream leg bar acted like she was sick. She'd just sit by herself and then finally got in the best with that faraway look. I agree it may be best to isolate her regardless.

Just wanted to share a pic of one of my sweet little peeps

Aww so sweet! You should pitch a chick hatching show to animal planet, they always sucker me into watching baby animal shows.

So part way through the incubators "day 21" and so far 3 hatched during day 20 and 3 pips. Last night one of the pips enlargened slightly then oozed with the egg tooth just showing and blowing bubbles. Woke this morning with a lot of dried stuff on it and a small hole where the tooth was and one new pip with no changes to the other two pips, but every once in a while you can hear faint chirping, two different tones. I think one voice is from the freshly pipped one as you can see the tip of the tooth in the hole every once in a while.
I am extremely worried about the oozer as I know from past experience that egg make a very tough glue, but at this point there is not much I can do but watch.
Dang this has more drama then a tv drama or soap opera, but much much more rewarding.

Day 18 here! Hopefully some of the broodies' eggs survived all the drama with the mite invasion. Going to candle the eggs in the incubator tonight and go into lockdown! Last time we candled, 5 of the 6 looked good and 1 looked like it had died. Hopefully we will have a few that hatch out somewhere, fingers crossed!

@cedarcovefarm
She bounced back a day or two later. Not broody but I never did find out what it was. I'm guessing she at something that didn't agree with her. Thanks for commenting.

Adorable chicks everyone can't wait til spring so I can hatch more. Just had to make a deal with DH2B lol
