OCTOBER HATCH-A-LONG!!! 2015

I'm sorry to hear that. You did the best you could. I know how hard it is to lose one and think if only I had helped sooner. But remember if you had helped too soon you could've killed it outright by bleeding it out. It's a fine line. I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

So this was my very first hatching and I have 7 new chicks with one being an oegb.
I have two flocks because of "chicken math", three if you consider a bantam and two hens as a "flock".
I was gifted a rooster who needed a hen then......
Except for three pullets I seem to have collected a lot of 2+ yr old "pets" and layers with two Jersey Giant roosters to run things. uh 29 all told and half lay.
Picked up a relatively cheap incubator from ebay and started collecting eggs as I was unwilling to buy good eggs until I figured out how it all works.
Along the way I made many mistakes but that's how I learn.
I collected eggs for 10 days and had them just inside the backdoor and turned the cartons when I passed by. They are from a purebred Jersey Giant and a Jersey Giant X {see avatar}
Hens are Rhode-I-R, some commercial X-layers, and a few maranXwelsummer and a couple of maranX?.
At lock-down there were 26 eggs, so the eggtopsy.
the other bantam egg had a black/mold/bacterial growth in the air sack
one pipped the edge of its yolk sack which oozed out and it suffocated
one stopped developing at about day15 {?}
3 hadn't absorbed their yolks
3 looked ready to go but didn't pip
1 pipped just below the airsack
4 stopped at about day 10
1 was half turned and facing the middle of the egg
2 had completely filled the egg leaving no airsack
1 was fully developed but filled only half the egg and couldn't pip the airsack through the egg white
1 pipped the wrong end and rescued too late and ran out of energy. This was from my favorite rhode-I-r whos eggs look like this

{ha, the pic is sideways now but it's difficult telling ends apart.}

The last two were particularly disturbing as the small one was from the purebred rooster but was white while all the rest were black, and the other was from the X-rooster and was black with gold wings.
In the final analysis , I had not stored nor handled the eggs correctly, too many cross breeds, and I did not get the hens ready for hatching eggs with any kind of supplements.
The incubator worked great, so I'm pleased and starting my plans for a spring hatch. Hmmm, I think I have room for another coop.
Thanks for letting me ramble. : }

Good Luck and Happy Hatches All.

Boo! No signs of growth from my chicken eggs. Got signs of life from some quail eggs though. Will wait for day 14 before calling the chicken eggs goners.

I'm sorry for the losses. We all make mistakes honey. That is how any of us are able to learn. It's the ones that make repeated mistakes. That's evidence of not learning. Those are the ones I worry about. Give it to the Lord dear. I know it's tough. I wanted to say also that the egg in the picture looks to be upside down. The end up is fuller than the end that's facing downward in the picture. Hence that's the narrow end. So I'd call it upside down. But I'm no expert! I have a hen that lays eggs like that. Very hard to tell which end is up! But like you stated...it's all a constant learning process! Don't you dare beat yourself up over any of this,ya hear? This year,I was raising my first chick. Long story short....I sat on her while she was ranging in the field. And I killed her. Split her tummy open and watched her die in my hands. You want to talk about horrified and feeling guilty!!!! No tragedy is worse than another really,they're all hard. Death in general is hard. But I have peace knowing that every animal lost,even an embryo,is in heaven. Hopefully that gives you some comfort. I will be praying for you. May You feel His embrace!!! God bless you.

Congrats on your hatch! Some do come early...bantams usually or incubation temps that run a litTle high can push a faster hatch date. Enjoy!

Oh this batch will be exciting. 23 into the hatcher. Mostly dark brown eggs from my Red Star hens. Two friends asked me if I knew anyone with laying hens; they wanted a few. So my answer to them is...I'll make some up for you. So twelve eggs are Dark Cornish X Red Star, hard to candle they are dark brown.How many will hatch...fingers crossed. They should be good for free range, lay largish eggs since my Dark Cornish lay med/large eggs and my Red Star lay Extra Large, and they will be medium brown. Then my friend wanted to hatch some of her extra large blue egg producing Araucanas. Finally I have some of my eggs from the Dark Cornish and Cornish crosses. Here we go...

Congrats on your seven new chicks. At least you are looking at your hatch to learn...good for you. I had some CCL hatch out white- goes back to the origination of the breed when they crossed in the white leghorn...they are beautiful birds!

If you want to beef up your hens feeding schedule just let them have nice free range time, fruit & nutritious yummies. Oddly, I have a 100% hatch rate in my crew from my own eggs whether they are crossed or not. But, i credit my incubator also because it is dummy proof. My styrobator...I was nothing but a death chamber. Hatch rates from 0-50% on shipped eggs.

Hatching is addictive...Should come with a warning sign, I started hatching last November and I have over 200 in my flock now!
