I'm so sorry Ravenblue I'm praying for you and your little ones too. Sometimes they just don't make it idk I wish I could help or five you some advice.

​one of the chicks just died!! I don't know what happened, it was looking healthy and running around and I saw it drinking this morning and then they were all back under the heat lamp sleeping on and off and then they were running around again except for this one still under the light I lifted her out and she had bubbles coming out of her mouth and was cool to touch and was opening her beak but no sound coming out and died in my hand while I was trying to think of what to do!!

And the one that hatched last and was still drying in the incubator finally fluffed up and I put her in the brooder and she was running around too but now she's barely moving under the heat lamp. I dropper fed her electrolytes but no improvement in the last hour and now she's not opening her eyes anymore. I am so upset I have never had full size healthy looking chicks die on me before! The box they are being brooded in as well as the water/food dishes scrubbed and bleached and air dried days before they hatched and the temperature under the heat lamp is 100 degree and the water I gave them was boiled and cooled and the chick starter they have is from the same bag my older chicks are eating without issue. I'm panicking as to what is causing the deaths and there are 5 more chicks in there what do I do????

It happens. My quail chick was fine one evening and dead the next day. Weak chick, maybe.
in other news, I have set 8 ameraucana/silkie cross eggs, due Oct 30. Will add coturnix quail to the bator on Monday so hatch days for both will be that day.

These 6 buffs are healthy and running around the brooder.



This is the last buff to hatch, waiting for her to dry out in the incubator. I added a flannel to help her dry out as she hatched 12 hours ago and still looks wet. I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do?

1 chick quit when only half out of her shell

2 eggs that had pipped quit without further progress

and another one that had hatched but seemed small was dead this morning

So out of 14 eggs at the beginning of incubation and 11 going into lockdown we have 7 chicks.

They are in a very careful lab in isolation so that they don't get contaminated by other pigs. I really hope they can start helping people with diabetes soon.

Thank you for the advice! I should be at work but i took some PTO to figure out this baby chick. I left it in the incubator in that half shell state all night but it didnt budge an inch. So I started peeling again. I peeled as much of the shell off as i could. Where there was drips of fresh blood and i did not proceed at those areas. I held the egg in my hand with tissues so i could quick stop any blood leaks.

Well it was a very sad sight to see the chick, even though now completely 'free' not have any energy to kick or peep out at me or even open his eyes. Just laid there in that open shell, eyes closed, lethargic. I really started to feel like it was a lost cause. I put her in the bator and re-moistened the humidity cloths and just waited.

Well about 20 minutes go by, and i start hearing excited peeping. I check the bator and the chick finally is kicking around! YES! But the eyes are not open yet. I can see the eyeball moving underneath but the lids aren’t opening. I did a quick google search and one cause of eye lids not opening is... low humidity! Which is the exact situation i am dealing with with these Brown welsummer eggs. Even more time passed and she is acting frantic. (the other egg hatched with issues while on teh phone with wellsfargo, now that was interesting to ask the representative to 'hold on' while i qtip the dried out shell membranes, ha)

So i ran some warm/hot tap water and took that chick, wrapped my fingers under adn around her body, neck and head to support, and dunked her Up to her Neck into the warm water. I then used a qtip and dabbed warm water over her eyes. THEY OPENED! she is now in the bator, very energetic, peeping like mad, pecking at things and pretty much acting like she is late for the party. That sticky gooeyness that you mentioned was caked on her body really yucky like. Much like drying glue! The little hot bath i gave her really has her looking like a new hatchling!

here she is in the incubator, high humidity is making the windows foggy. But i think she is good to go. a foot dosesnt look complete straight, but i know how to straighten those toes out. yay, hopefully i come home to a still thriving baby welsummer

whew. what a start to my weekend. I am going to need 2 full days of recovery. But finally my staggered hatch is over. its been 6 days of a hatchlings arriving and im ready to find an egg big enough to hide into for 21 days. lol. this was surely a learning experience.

Congrats! I'm so glad! I've helped chicks before too, and I put drips of electrolyte water on their beaks. They were so weak that for the next day they couldn't stand and at times could barely even lift their heads. I didn't think they would make it, but they did, and are very strong, lively, healthy teens now.

I'm so sorry to hear that.

It could be that the eggs got bacteria in them, it could be that they were weak at hatching or perhaps they had poor genetics. I had a weak chick that I held under my shirt and gave drips of electrolyte water for a few hours that strengthened up and survived. Make sure it isn't getting bullied, inhaling water, or choking on food.
As mentioned it could be something genetic instead of a disease.

Trying to think ahead so popped one of these clear caps off to check readings when/while I open to add water, it occurred to me that maybe one or more should be open for the hatching??? For extra oxygen I thought I read some where, not in the pamphlet that came with this machine.

...Deep breathes. Sometimes chicks just are not strong enough and there is nothing we can do. It may just be in the genetics.

May I make a suggestion that you back off the heat lamp to under 95 degrees in the brooder. The heat lamps are tricky and I fried my first chick because of those lamps even though I checked the temps religiously. They can make some hot stale pockets. You will know if the chicks are too cold they will cheep and get loud and huddle together.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I woke up this morning and one of my 23 week old girls(isa browns) is acting off. She was our first layer at 16 weeks and is one of my two favorite girls. I can't decide if something is wrong with her or not. Please help. She didn't run off with the flock to graze she did eat a bit of scratch and has been drinking a ton. No discharge from her eyes or nose but she seems tired. Her crop was very large this morning but no foul smelling breath, no solid masses in her crop that I can feel. It's a bit squishy feeling but pliable and I can feel the grit in there. Please help she did pick at grass a bit after I massaged her crop but I'm worried please any help would be appreciated.

best to isolate and continue to give her access to feed and water. you may just have to allow the issue to run its course.
