October Hatch-A-Long 2017

Pics
Exciting! I just hatched out AC a few days ago. They’re such pretty little birds. :)

:celebrate:celebrate:celebrate Keep us posted!

You’ll have to let me know how it works out with incubating in the egg cartons. I have thought of trying this a few times, so I’m curious to see if you find it helpful! :)

Welcome!! :frow

I hadn’t gotten any notifications either! Playing catch up now. ;)
I had 23 notifications this morning. Twenty. Three.

So.... this is our first hatch for a few years and I've been getting up to speed on what is currently working for people (love this forum - thanks to all for sharing their experiences! ) - I'm thinking of trying fermented feed (assuming we hatch - shipped eggs / new to us incubators etc).
From what I'm reading I need to get my first ferment on asap tomorrow - ive got unmedicated chick crumb & a wild bird seed mix ready for the babies. Is anyone else feeding chicks ff straight away?
All advice would be gratefully received!

I don't have any experience with FF however I wanted to say good luck!!

I just set 19 silkie eggs this morning, should be paint, black, white, and mottled. Can't wait for Oct 26th to get here.

Awesome! Can't wait to see the different colors!

I’m on day 9 so I’m not sure if I fit in Sept. or Oct.
I have 5 active embryos right now started with 12.
4 Ayam Cemani and a green egg.

Woohoo!! I believe it goes off of what month they are going to hatch. It's great that five are looking good, and hopefully some more will too!

I came home to peeping and 4 pipping that I can see!

Yay!!! Can't wait to see Pics of those cuties!!

I meant to join this thread a couple of weeks ago. Better late than never. I have Black Copper Marans and Bantam Cochin egg currently on day 14. They were all purchased off ebay from 2 different sellers.

This picture is a bit outdated as I'm down to 6 Marans and 15 Bantams. Those left look active and healthy. My plan is to lock down at day 16 in case any bantams hatch early. This will be my first attempt hatching upright in egg cartons. I'm hoping it helps the shipped eggs have a better hatch rate.

How exciting!! Best of luck!!

I am sooooo excited!! I set the new dozen of back yard breed eggs on Tuesday and while I was turning some of the eggs this morning (not all fit in the egg turners) I checked a couple very carefully and saw growth!!!!!! Actually saw the heartbeat too! So neat :ya

I'm a little bummed. My shipped eggs didn't ship today, either. They have to ship tomorrow, then, or I'm just going to ask for my money back. If I'd known they would wait until the end of the week, I would have ordered them for last week. I hope the other eggs I got will wait. If they were laid Tuesday/Wednesday, I guess they would still stand a fair chance if I set them Monday. Assuming I get my shipped eggs Monday. Argh. I understand a shipping date of anytime this week is what I agreed to, but when they only have to come up with 12 eggs from, like, three dozen different breeds, come on. They weren't available until Saturday? I just don't buy that.

And only because I can't stand waiting on these eggs, it's a bunny! My son's teacher mentioned wanting a rabbit for her classroom on their field trip Wednesday. In case I knew anyone, she said. I didn't think I did, but today I was offered a free rabbit. No commitment from the teacher, but I hope she takes her. If not, my son just got himself a rabbit, and he didn't even have to poop in the potty to earn it.

That's a bummer. Where were the eggs ordered from?
Cure rabbit. Looks friendly :)
The eggs are from My Pet Chicken. I was drawn in by the variety they offer, against my better judgement to stay local.

The bunny is very friendly. A friend of a friend did an intoxicated impulse buy, literally, yesterday and was rehoming the bun today. If she only just came from a pet store, she's still a baby and seems very calm and well socialized. She came with a cage, timothy hay, a hay feeder, food, a bowl and a water bottle, but no bedding and nothing to attach the water bottle to the cage. Yup, someone was intoxicated. The cage had never been set up and the rabbit was in a hard cider box with holes cut in it. How did they even get her home from the pet store??? If she stays, I'm going to call her Cider, lol. I'm still hoping my son's teacher takes her.

I just had to share. If I can't get excited about eggs, I have to get excited about something. If these eggs take any longer, I'm going to have entirely unintentional Halloween chicks.

Dang it, I just realized Monday is a holiday. I won’t get these eggs until Tuesday at the earliest. Time to read up on staggered hatches. I’m not going to wait to start these ones and lose some for the sake of eggs whose hatch rate is likely to be low anyway.

Got another order of eBay shipped eggs today and these eggs are actually better looking than many of our local eggs! :clap

Foxfirepavillion (in ID) did an EXCELLENT job of packing (no confetti whatsoever) and the eggs had sturdy solid air cells and small air cells...Like the hen laid them in the mailing box fresh. Unlike the SBEL eggs received earlier which were a jiggly sloppy mess which we don't really hold out much hope for.

Methinks I'm going to have some Cuckoo Bluebars!

That's good to know. This seller is only one state away from me. I've considered buying from them. Now I think I definitely will but not till spring. Getting too cold in my area to hatch any more chicks.
