October Hatch-A-Long 2017

Day 20. This is what I woke up to. Always so exciting!

Did my preliminary candling last night and threw out the TJ eggs and the SBEL as there was no evidence of veining at all. Truth be told, the SBEL were the worst shipped eggs I've ever gotten with lots of floating bubbles, detached air cells. However, the Cuckoo Bluebar shipped eggs have 11 of the 12 veining strong! They're doing better than my local eggs! (Well, maybe they're doing the same....)

A shipment of Marans eggs is coming any day now. We've had a cold snap in the weather and I just pray they aren't sitting out on a USPS loading dock somewhere. Nothing like getting a box of frozen eggs to sour a day. They're the last eggs I'll order for the year as hens have slowed down and the frigid weather has amped up. I may set a few more local Welsummer eggs with this batch of Marans. We'll see. Looks like I'll be in the November hatch-along, too!

I’m on day 9 so I’m not sure if I fit in Sept. or Oct.
I have 5 active embryos right now started with 12.
4 Ayam Cemani and a green egg.

What are you using to candle your eggs? I am really struggling with trying to see. Last night I left some ambient light on in the background and it seemed to be a little better. I'm now at 13 days with 7 barred rock and one EE egg. I honestly can't see well enough to tell anything except that there is an air cell on all. The EE egg is small and I can barely see anything through the shell.

I am using a Farm Innovators still air incubator with a standard thermometer and an electronic temp/humidity gauge.

Unfortunately I have had some temperature fluctuations, but hopefully I will get something. Time will tell, but I am hopeful.

I came home to peeping and 4 pipping that I can see!

:wee

What are those gorgeous golden eggs?? So pretty! Last I read you had pipping. How did hatch go?

Thank you for the kind words!

My hatch went really well! Out of a few dozen eggs, all but 1 hatched!

Those are what some of my Marans eggs look like when the hens "ink" runs out :)
