So what exactly is an internal pip? Is it when they break the membrane? And how can you tell? Is it just to do with where the beak sits in the air cell?

It's when they break through the inner membrane. When you candle the egg the air sac will get a huge dip before the internal pip. You can see the beak/head moving in the air cell after internal pip. See the lighter shadow in the air sac? that is the beak/head.
Tonight at midnight is the start of day 17. Humidity has rising 10% by itself and nothign has changed. Humidity in my other incubator hasn't changed at also I know its not just the environment. What would cause this? early hatch maybe?
By day 17 chicks would be producing a lot more of there own heat and exchanging more moisture with oxygen, etc., no? My first hatch did the same thing.
Broody update: I have no idea if the way "Lilly" is treating the eggs is normal or not. It definitely isn't consistent with instructions for incubating eggs. For the first week, she has been setting on them at night and then standing up away from them most of the day. She does move them around. Every day, I scoop out her poo and put in a few handfuls of fresh straw and some pine chips. She works at organizing it all day and when I come check on her, she has everything smoothed out around the nest. She now has 10 eggs to set on. They might have different stages of growth. I tried to candle some the other night and some showed slight growth--maybe at day 4. All of this is an experiment. If this works, I'll be surprised!![]()
